  • The Ghost: A Modern Fantasy

    Arnold Bennett

language (Start Classics, April 11, 2014)
First published in 1907, The Ghost was the first of many "fantasias on modern times" written by Arnold Bennett. These illustrated his ability to produce not only realistic novels, perfected in his portrayals of provincial English life set in the Staffordshire scenery of his childhood, but also more sensational stories, written after his move to London where he developed a far more cosmopolitan interest. A supernatural story, The Ghost tells the tale of a beautiful opera star, Rosetta Rosa, whose beauty seems to cast a spell upon all those who meet her. When Carl Foster, a young doctor, sees Rosa at a London opera, and is instantly captivated, he soon finds himself plagued by mysterious happenings, and begins to see a malignant, spectral figure everywhere he turns. When another man enraptured by Rosa mysteriously dies, Carl begins to wonder whether loving her could bring with it a deadly curse. Moving between London and Paris, this fast-paced story draws the reader into a ghostly world of twists, turns, drama, and suspense.

(CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Jan. 10, 2014)
“It is said by some authorities to be the best ghost story that has appeared since Bulwer Lytton’s ‘House of the Brain.’ The novel is a love story as well as a ghost story, and it has a good complicated plot in the course of which things happen with all that variety and frequency which is a ghost is able to devise.” -The New York Times “”An exciting story of opera singers and railway accidents and channel-boat disasters and trapdoors and revenge and jealousy that is strong enough to be carried beyond death, and of love that triumphs even over such fatal jealousy.” –Book Review Digest “Whether his mood be fantastic or serious, his work is always first-class, and though his output is enormous, signs of haste are never apparent in the writing or construction.” -Academy When Carl Foster, a young doctor, sees beautiful Rosetta Rosa at a London opera he is instantly captivated -- and almost as rapidly finds himself plagued by mysterious occurrences. When another of Rosa's paramours un-expectedly dies, Carl begins to wonder if her glamour carries a deadly curse. (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Aug. 3, 2016)
Enoch Arnold Bennett (27 May 1867 – 27 March 1931) was an English writer. He is best known as a novelist, but he also worked in other fields such as journalism, propaganda and film.ennett was born in a modest house in Hanley in the Potteries district of Staffordshire. Hanley is one of a conurbation of six towns which were joined together at the beginning of the 20th century as Stoke-on-Trent. Enoch Bennett, his father, qualified as a solicitor in 1876, and the family moved to a larger house between Hanley and Burslem.Bennett was educated locally in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Bennett was employed by his father but the working relationship failed. Bennett found himself doing jobs such as rent-collecting which were uncongenial. He also resented the low pay; it is no accident that the theme of parental miserliness is important in his novels. In his spare time he was able to do a little journalism, but his breakthrough as a writer came after he had moved from the Potteries. At the age of 21, he left his father's practice and went to London as a solicitor's clerk
