  • Don Quixote

Miguel de Cervantes, Philippe Duquenoy, A.R.N. Publications

    Audiobook (A.R.N. Publications, Aug. 13, 2018)
Don Quixote features two of the most beloved characters in classical literature. Don Quixote and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, embark on comical exploits that are as charming today as they were when the book was published nearly 400 years ago. After reading chivalric romances, Don Quixote becomes infatuated with the idea of being a heroic knight and with the help of his squire sets out to do exactly that. Although Sancho’s adventures continually get him into trouble, he grows and learns from those mishaps, becoming a character that will enchant the listener long after the last words. When originally published, Don Quixote was what would today be considered experimental fiction. It would go on to influence some of the most prolific authors in history, including Sterne, Dickens, Melville, as well as a host of others. Modern scholars consider Don Quixote to be the most influential work of literature to come out of the Spanish Golden Age.

eBook (Classic Cervantes: Don Quixote, Jan. 4, 2014)
"Don Quixote", fully titled "The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha", is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. It follows the adventures of a nameless hidalgo (at the end of Part II given the name Alonso Quixano) who reads so many chivalric novels that he loses his sanity and decides to set out to revive chivalry, undo wrongs, and bring justice to the world, under the name Don Quixote. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood. Don Quixote, in the first part of the book, does not see the world for what it is, and prefers to imagine that he is living out a knightly story. The story implements various themes, such as intertextuality, realism, metatheatre, and literary representation.Published in two volumes, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature, and one of the earliest canonical novels, it regularly appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published. It has had major influence on the literary community, as evidenced by direct references in Alexandre Dumas' "The Three Musketeers" and Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", as well as the word 'quixotic'.Miguel de Cervantes said that the first chapters are taken from "The Archive of La Mancha" and the rest translated from the Arabic from the Moorish author Cid Hamet Ben Engeli. This metafictional trick appears to be designed to give a greater credibility to the text, by implying that Don Quixote is a real character and that the story truly occurred several decades back. Yet it is obvious to the reader that such a thing is impossible, because the presence of Cide Hamete would have caused numerous temporal anomalies. It was a common method at the time because of the disapproval the novel genre was subject to at that time.

I mean laugh out loud funny. Sometimes at work I would unplug my iPod and read out a scene . . . It is funny ironic, funny slapstick, funny base, funny absurd.” Drew Gummerson“So the best thing to say up front, perhaps, is get hold of Don Quixote and make time for it. It will be worth the television sitcoms you skip, the thirty or so quiet evenings you spend on it . . . But the book quite staggered me with its charm, beauty, and profundity. Once you enter (or re-enter) its expansive, ruminative, deeply nourishing world, the literary equivalent of eating "slow food," it's hard not to become a bit of a bore about how stupendous it is.” Terry Castle, The Atlantic“I practically did a dance when I read this. It was wonderful. So many different characters drifted through this book and I became attached to all of them. I felt like something had been taken away from me when I finished.” 1001 Books you must read before you die“Alonso Quixada, a retired gentleman of La Mancha, his mind addled through overconsumption of chivalric romances, dons a home-made helmet and rusty armour, saddles up his hack Rocinante, recruits a squire in the person of Sancho Panza (a local labourer lured by the promise of his own island to govern) and sets out as a knight-errant to perform feats of bravery in honour of his (supposed) lady, Dulcinea.” Adam Newey, The GuardianDON QUIXOTE is Cervantes’s original, epic, and hilarious masterpiece in a specially produced edition. Don Quixote is a middle-aged gentleman from the region of La Mancha in central Spain. Obsessed with the chivalrous ideals touted in books he has read, he decides to take up his lance and sword to defend the helpless and destroy the wicked. After a first failed adventure, he sets out on a second one with a somewhat befuddled laborer named Sancho Panza, whom he has persuaded to accompany him as his faithful squire. In return for Sancho’s services, Don Quixote promises to make Sancho the wealthy governor of an isle. On his horse, Rocinante, a barn nag well past his prime, Don Quixote rides the roads of Spain in search of glory and grand adventure. He gives up food, shelter, and comfort, all in the name of a peasant woman, Dulcinea del Toboso, whom he envisions as a princess.

The immortal comedy of Don Quixote, Sancho Panza, and their chivalrous misadventures. Entranced by romantic tales of heroism and chivalry, Don Quixote goes on a delusional quest for fame and adventure as a self-proclaimed knight errant. Riding his nag of a horse and wearing a rusty old suit of armor, he roams the countryside with his loyal squire Sancho Panza. Together they encounter an array of unforgettable characters and undertake some of the most famously foolhardy exploits in literature. Widely considered one of the greatest works of fiction ever written, Don Quixote is also recognized as the first modern European novel and a classic example of the picaresque novel. Originally published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615, its iconic characters and timeless themes have inspired works of homage from generations of artists, including Pablo Picasso, Richard Strauss, and Orson Welles. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.
