  • From the Clouds to the Mountains: Comprising Narratives of Strange Adventures By Air, Land, and Water

    Jules Verne

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Aug. 17, 2012)
This new volume by Jules Verne is made up of tales written by him at very different dates. Dr. Ox is quite recent, having been suggested to the author of Strange Journeys by a most interesting experiment made in Paris a few years since ;but the other stories, entitled Master Zachary, A Winter in the I ce-F ields, and AD rama in Mid-A ir, were written more than twenty years ago, and are consequently anterior to the series of works which have so justly made the name of Jules Verne famous. We thought it only right to include these stories in a complete edition of Verne sworks, as they assuredly reflect no discredit on him. In them the reader may discover, may foresee, the germs of more important works, such as Five Weeks in a Balloon, Captain Hatteras, and The Fur Country, which have been so successful. They are interesting as being the only collection of short stories ever published by Verne, and the only one of his works which has never previously been translated. A story which has nothing fictitious in it, imder the title of The Fortieth French A scent of Mont Blanc, concludes the book. The story and the ascent were made by M. Paul Verne, brother of M. Jules Verne.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. • From the Clouds to the Mountains

    Paul] Verne, Jules [& Verne

Hardcover (William F. Gill and Company, March 15, 1874)
Boston: William F. Gill and Company, 1874. First Illustrated Edition in English. Translated by A.L. Alger. 12mo, 285 pp. Terra-cotta cloth with gilt devices, one of the lighter-than air balloon's gondola separating, and the other three mountain climbers ascending Mt. Blanc. Decorative black and gilt lettering and filigree on cover and spine. Slate coated endpapers. Illustrations, including frontispiece, from wood engravings. Editor's preface [not found on other English editions]. This much-sought version of the collection of five Verne stories (the last, "The Fortieth French Ascent of Mt. Blanc", was written by his brother Paul] may, in fact, be the first collected book edition of any sort in English. While Osgood's edition, entitled Doctor Ox [etc] was announced and registered in May and June 1874 respectively, no copies were deposited until July 17th. This Gill edition was announced as "now ready" on July 11th [ref. Taves & Michaluk V012]. Interestingly, Gill's announcement referred to a quarto size, of which I've never seen an example; presumably, a decision was made in favor of the known size, about 7.3" x 5.6". In any case, a popular translation, one which was followed by a "New Holiday Edition" and a "popular edition". Condition: better than unusual for this title, a sharp very good plus, Slight shelf wear and soiling, spine ends and corners lightly bumped, faint marginal at several pages; ¾" tear on top edge of title page, small paper residue on front pastedown. Very sharp, bright and tight for this title. Stories included: A Drama In Mid-Air; Dr. Ox's Hobby; Master Zachary; A Winter Among the Ice-Fields; and The Fortieth French Ascent of Mt.Blanc. L68

  • From the Clouds to the Mountains. Comprising Narratives of Strange Adventures by Air, Land, and Water; In Five Parts

Jules Verne, Paul Verne, A. L. Alger

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, April 4, 2016)
About the Book The action and adventure genre in fiction depicts events or a series of events that happen outside the ordinary course of the protagonist's daily life, generally accompanied by dangerous episodes and physical action. Adventure stories are quick moving, with the pace of the plot being a critical component of mood setting. Action and adventure have been common book themes since the earliest days of fiction writing. In fact, the plots of Medieval romances were comprised of a series of adventures. Action / adventure fiction often overlaps with other genres, such as: war novels, crime novels, sea stories, Robinsonades, and spy stories. Also in this Book Our titles on adventurers and explorers present the lives and exploits of people who explored or travelled the world in a pioneering way. These include naturalists, sailors, mountain climbers, dog sledders, swimmers, pilots, and underwater explorers. Their activities had profound effects on the dissemination of religion, agricultural techniques, cultural values, disease, and the establishment of colonies throughout the world. And in this Book The coming-of-age genre in literature focuses on the growth and development of a protagonist from youth to adulthood. Such stories tend to emphasize dialogue or internal monologue rather than focussing on action, and are often set back in time. Typically, the subjects of coming-of-age stories are teenagers who experience some issues or traumas during their formative years. Classic coming-of-age novels are Northanger Abbey, by Jane Austen, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce.About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. While these books may have occasional imperfections, we consider that only hand checking of every page ensures readable content without poor picture quality, blurred or missing text etc. That's why we: republish only hand checked books; that are high quality; enabling readers to see classic books in original formats; that are unlikely to have missing or blurred pages. You can search "Leopold Classic Library" in categories of your interest to find other books in our extensive collection. Happy reading!
