The Gelada, which is a species of monkey, is also called the Bleeding Heart Monkey. It is called as such because of the red patch on its chest –its identifying mark and what literally sets them apart from other species of monkeys. Because of the patch, it looks as if its chest (or its heart) is bleeding. It is also called Gelada Baboon because it somewhat looks like a baboon, which is actually a close relative.Like baboons, the Gelada is also a large monkey. It’s not bigger than an adult person, but it’s bigger than regular monkeys.Aside from its “bleeding heart,” you will also recognize the Gelada by its color. The color of its fur can be light to dark brown. It has rough, course hair and the males (in particular) have long hair on their backs (like a cape). Note, too, that the females have thinner coats than the males.Excited to learn more about the Gelada? Get a copy of this book and discover more fascinating information about this animal.
