There are few difficulties that cannot be surmounted by patience, resolution, and pluck, and great as are the obstacles that nature andthe Russian government oppose to an escape from the prisons ofSiberia, such evasions have occasionally been successfully carriedout, and that under far less advantageous circumstances than thoseunder which the hero of this story undertook the venture. For theaccount of life in the convict establishments in Siberia I am indebtedto the very valuable books by my friend the Rev. Dr. Lansdell, whohas made himself thoroughly acquainted with Siberia, traversing thecountry from end to end and visiting all the principal prisons. Heconversed not only with officials, but with many of the prisoners andconvicts, and with Russian and foreign residents in the country, andhis testimony as to the management of the prisons and the conditionof the convicts is confirmed by other independent writers personallycognizant of the facts, and like him able to converse fluently in thelanguage, and writing from intimate knowledge of the subject.G. Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 24, 2015)
HALF a dozen boys were gathered in one of the studies at Shrewsbury. A packed portmanteau and the general state of litter on the floor was sufficient to show that it was the last day of term. "Well, I am awfully sorry you are going, Bullen; we shall all miss you. You would certainly have been in the football team next term; it is a nuisance altogether." "It is a nuisance; and I am beastly sorry I am leaving. Of course I have known for some time that I should be going out to Russia; but I did not think the governor would have sent me until after I had gone through the school. His letter a fortnight ago was a regular stumper. I thought I should have had another year and a half or two years, and, of course, that is just the jolliest part of school life. However, it cannot be helped."
