  • The Babes in the Wood

    Anonymous Anonymous, Randolph Caldecott

    eBook (, Aug. 11, 2017)
Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886) was one of the most important British illustrators. He transformed the world of decorated children's books in the Victorian era. In 1877, he was asked by Edmund Evans, the color printer and talented engraver, to illustrate two children's books. These books were an immediate success and he went on to produce two books every Christmas until he died. Caldecott chose all the stories and rhymes he illustrated and occasionally wrote and added to the stories himself. His delightful style and humor can still be enjoyed by young and old alike. This story, 'The Babes in The Wood', was originally published in 1879. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. It is a pleasure to publish this new, high quality, and affordable edition of this timeless story. This edition is amply illustrated.

    eBook (, June 20, 2017)
Folklore has it that the events told in Babes in the Wood originally happened in Wayland Wood in Norfolk, England. It is said that the uncle lived at the nearby Griston Hall. The ghosts of the murdered children are said to haunt Wayland Wood.[2] The village signs at Griston and nearby Watton depict the story. In the folklore version, the uncle resents the task and pays two men to take the children into the woods and kill them. Finding themselves unable to go through with the act, the criminals abandon the children in the wood where, unable to fend for themselves, they eventually die.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 8, 2017)
BABES IN THE WOOD - Illustrated EditionThis tale was published in 1879 with illustrations by Randolph Caldecott, a morality tale that displays life and death in the raw language of the times. The story tells of two small children left in the care of an uncle and aunt after their parents' death. The uncle gives the children to ruffians to be disposed of in order to acquire their inheritance, telling his wife they are being sent to London for their upbringing. The murderers fall out and the "milder" of the two take the children into the woods telling them he will return with food, but he never returns. The children, wandering alone in the woods, eating berries, lie down and die, where they are covered in leaves by the robins. As with other morality tales, it will lead to many questions of life and death and retribution for the mean uncle. Did the children go to heaven, etc. Recommended for children 8 and older. This is the same theme used in Hansel and Gretel. Recommended by The Gunston Trust. Ages: 8-12+
