    Born in Ireland in 1889, MacGill began his career as a poet and journalist. He was known as the "Navvy Poet" since he worked as a navigational engineer. The Dough Boys is a novel of World War One, and presumably draws upon MacGill's experiences serving with the London Irish Rifles, a British Army regiment.
