The Swallows, Amazons and Ds are united again for Arthur Ransome's final story in the series. Flat on his front, binoculars to his eyes, alone at dusk, Dick makes a remarkable discovery: two rare birds, never before seen in the British Isles. Captain Flint and his crew decide to consult an expert to confirm the discovery. But when the man they ask turns out to have his collector's eye on the birds' eggs, not to mention skins, an enjoyable voyage around the Outer Hebrides becomes a desperate race to save the birds, and themselves.

    eBook (, May 17, 2020)
The Swallows, Amazons and Ds are all on a sailing cruise with Captain Flint in the Outer Hebrides. While the older members of the party clean the boat before returning her to the owner, the younger ones explore inland and a mysterious bird is seen nesting on an island in a loch. The question arises whether it is a great northern diver, which has never been known to nest in the British Isles, or a black-throated diver. As the plot involves more excitement and violence than usual some have classified this book as one of the metafictional stories in the series: a fantasy tale made up by the children themselves. The other two books generally agreed to be metafictional are Peter Duck and Missee Lee.

    MP3 CD (Brilliance Audio, Sept. 8, 2015)
Finally! Here is the twelfth, and ļ¬nal, book in Arthur Ransomeā€™s acclaimed Swallows and Amazons series. People familiar with his earlier work will recognize the pattern: children set out on an adventure (this one off the coast of Scotland) with a minimum of parental advice and interference. Here, the story centers on a desperate race to thwart the efforts of pernicious egg collectors threatening the survival of a pair of rare birds not previously known to nest in British waters (actually, the bird is the handsome North American ā€œGreat Northern Diver,ā€ more commonly called a loon). When we ļ¬rst considered reissuing this beloved series, we asked our friends what they thought of the idea. No one encouraged us; but we loved the books. They were rooted in reality and had the grit and voice of real experience. Practical information abounded ā€“ about sailing and navigating, tickling trout and tying knots. Problems set to children were solved. Today, with all twelve titles in print, weā€™re pleased to report that there are legions of Ransome fans who welcome each new addition with enthusiasm. The success of ļ¬ne writing has everything to do with good stories, palpable energy, engaging models, and credible adventures; and all these Arthur Ransome provides in spades. "Written in the most beautiful English, this is one of the books that I would be proud to give anyone." ā€“ BBC
