  • Christmas at Thompson Hall: A Mid-Victorian Christmas Tale

    Anthony Trollope, John Kingsley Shannon

Hardcover (Caledonia Press, March 15, 1978)
Anthony Trollope wrote "Christmas at Thompson Hall" in 1876. This was the year that saw publication of Mark Twain's "Tom Sawyer"; it was the year Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone; it was also America's Centenary. In this short tale, Trollope chose to be light and good-humored. His story turns on a mistaken identity, on several weaknesses - humorously portrayed - of human nature, and finally on a terrible, terribly farcical coincidence. In Trollope's "Autobiography," published after his death, he said: "A Christmas story, in the proper sense, should be the ebullition of some mind anxious to instil[l] others with a desire for Christmas religious thought, or Christmas festivities - or, better still, with Christmas charity." It is with the latter, with charity, and forgiveness, and good-humor - and with a marriage(!) that Trollope's story concludes. [From the Preface by John Kingsley Shannon]
