  • Beric the Briton

    G. A. Henty

    eBook (www.DelmarvaPublication.com, Sept. 3, 2014)
This story deals with the invasion of Britain by the Roman legionaries. Beric, who is a boy-chief of a British tribe, takes a prominent part in the insurrection under Boadicea; and after the defeat of that heroic queen (in A. D. 62) he continues the struggle in the fen-country. Ultimately, Beric is defeated and carried captive to Rome, where he is trained in the exercise of arms in a school of gladiators. Such is the skill that he there acquires that he succeeds in saving a Christian maid by slaying a lion in the arena, and is rewarded by being made librarian of the palace, and the personal protector of Nero. Finally he escapes from this irksome service, organizes a band of outlaws in Calabria, defies the power of Rome, and at length returns to Britain, where he becomes a wise ruler of his own people. • Beric the Briton: A Story of the Roman Invasion

    George A. Henty

Paperback (Fireship Press, Feb. 24, 2011)
With 48 pages of additional articles, references, and bibliographies of recommended reading. Between roughly 43 AD and 410 AD, the Roman Empire had extended itself to Great Britain. The local tribes were no match for disciplined Roman troops, and breaches of the Pax Romana were treated promptly and with ferocity. The Britons were thus under a state of subjugation; but that was not, in all respects, a bad thing. With the law and order that the Romans brought came advances in agriculture, industry and architecture that can still be seen and felt today. In this tale George Henty introduces us to Beric, a young man who fights with the Iceni tribe, led by the Warrior Queen Boadicea, against the Roman occupiers. After their eventual defeat, he leads a guerrilla band against the Romans from the swamplands to the west of the Iceni territory, but is captured and shipped to Rome. There he is trained as a gladiator, gains fame when he defeats a lion single-handed, and winds up serving in the palace of the degenerate emperor, Nero. He journeys back home when Nero dies, but his welcome is not what he expected. This book is an excellent exposure to the Roman conquest of Britain, a chapter in history that is far too often neglected. Henty's History Series Learning History Through Fiction The Henty series is a unique way of learning about history. It consists of over 80 novels, each written by George A. Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
