She was as chary of its expression with the new lover as she had been with the old, partly perhaps from a natural reserve, more from the consciousness of treachery which had never quite left her. Arundel's wooing had not been too smooth. He looked to marriage as the one means of healing Greta's conscience, but she had hitherto refused to name a time, much less a day.
