Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Feb. 1, 2018)
Excerpt from Seeing America on the Cuff: As Told to Frank Gill, Jr.The story that Paul Livingstone has to tell is one that Mr. Ripley might well include in his Believe It Or Nots, and it is one that you won't hear again, for' it is the first of its kind, and therefore the most interesting.By way of preparation let me tell you just how the writing of this book occurred. Pursuing my career as a writer of humor for several leading radio comedians, I had just returned to my office from a quiet fit of the staring horrors at Palm Springs, the desert retreat of Hollywood celebrities. I had cleaned up the last remaining traces of a season's labors and was ready to embark on a long vacation over the summer months, when the door opened and in walked Paul Livingstone. That was the end of my vacation and the beginning of this book. You will learn shortly of Paul's amazing ability as a sales man, just as I learned the day he walked into my office. With nothing but a scrapbook under his arm and a beautifully smooth line of salestalk on his tongue, he persuaded a tired, jittery writer to forego his vacation and undertake the writing of a book - for nothing! Free, gratis, without compensation. Immediately there springs to your mind's eye a picture of a human dynamo, the high-pressure, f ast-talking type that always leaves you with more life insurance than you can possibly afford; the kind that with a smile full of teeth watches you drive out of the Auto Show with a Packard when you went in to make a down payment on a Chevrolet; the kind that oh well, you must have been a sucker at least once in your life. But Paul isn't this type at all. He doesn't talk nearly as fast as I do, for instance. But how he can sell! It isn't his appearance that does it, either. Of average height, about the usual weight, with brownish hair and average features, he's well, average. Only his eyes jump at you when you meet him. Those electric blue eyes that seem to pin you back in your chair until you've heard what he has to say, taking his own sweet time to say it. Maybe the man gave me the Evil Eye, maybe he put a hex on me, I don't know. All I remember is that exactly one hour after Paul Livingstone walked into my office I had agreed to write his story - but what a story. It did not need writing, it simply needed telling.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, Sept. 5, 2015)
About the Book The Americas were settled by people migrating from Asia at the height of an Ice Age 15,000 years ago. There was no contact with Europeans until Vikings appeared briefly in the 10th century, and the voyages of Christopher Columbus from 1492. America's Indigenous peoples were the Paleo-Indians, who were initially hunter-gatherers. Post 1492, Spanish, Portuguese and later English, French and Dutch colonialists arrived, conquering and settling the discovered lands over three centuries, from the early 16th to the early 19th centuries. The United States achieved independence from England in 1776, while Brazil and the larger Hispanic American nations declared independence in the 19th century. Canada became a federal dominion in 1867.Also in this Book The history of Native Americans in the Americas commenced tens of thousands of years ago with the settlement by the Paleo-Indians. A wide variety of cultures existed during this era, and subsequent contacts with Europeans had profound impacts on their history. In the United States, the Archaic period lasted until 1000 BC, including a major culture of Mound builders, whose territory stretched from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. The Post-Archaic stage includes the Formative, Classic and Post-Classic stages. From the arrival of Europeans in the early 16th through 19th centuries, the population of Native Americans in North America declined through: epidemic diseases, violence and warfare at the hands of explorers and colonists, displacement from ancestoral lands, and internal warfare. In Central America the key civilizations were the Aztec and Mayan Empires. The Aztec Empire began as an alliance of three Nahua altepetl city-states: Mexico-Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan, which ruled the area in and around the Valley of Mexico from 1428 until the Spanish conquistadores under Hernán Cortés defeated them (1521). The Maya Mesoamerican civilization was noted for its hieroglyphic script, as well as for its art, architecture, mathematics, calendar, and astronomical system. In South America, the Norte Chico civilization in Peru is the oldest civilization in the Americas and while development was interrupted by Portuguese and Spanish colonization, and a demographic collapse ensued, the continent's mestizo and indigenous cultures remain distinct from those of the colonizers. This was one of the first six independent civilizations in the world, being contemporaneous with the Egyptian pyramids.About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. While these books may have occasional imperfections, we consider that only hand checking of every page ensures readable content without poor picture quality, blurred or missing text etc. That's why we: republish only hand checked books; that are high quality; enabling readers to see classic books in original formats; that are unlikely to have missing or blurred pages. Paul Clyde Livingstone, Frank Gill

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
