Paperback (Forgotten Books, May 18, 2017)
Excerpt from Learning to Think: Consisting of Easy and Entertaining Lessons, Designed to Assist in the First Unfolding of the Reflective and Reasoning Powers of ChildrenIn many cases where the answer of the question, though not obvious, is a matter of judgment, or taste, or opinion, the reply is left to the child, in order that the task of framing a reply may ex cite its imagination and exercise its thinking powers. In these cases, give the child full time to consider the question, and then comment gently and encouragingly on the answer he gives, so as to draw out his thoughts and ideas in full.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Jacob Abbott

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1856 Excerpt: ...will only make him run the faster. I think the boy ought not to have left the gate open. It is a large gate, and very heavy. It has a beam along the top of it. At one end of the beam are two boards with stones between. What do you suppose those stones are for? They are to balance the gate, and prevent the other end from bearing down too heavily, and so breaking the hinges. When a gate bears down too heavily on the end, it swings and breaks the hinges. Did you ever swing on a gate? Is it good fun to swing on a gate? Are people generally willing that boys should swing on their gates? Do you know why not? Do you see that this gate is formed of bars? How many bars are there? Do you see a bar that goes in a slanting direction from one corner of the gate to the other? That is to brace the gate and keep it square. Now we will turn over and see another funnv picture. It is a picture of a bear getting over a fence. He has been robbing one of the farmer's fields, and now he is going off with what he has taken. Do you see what he has taken? What has he got under his arm? A bundle of corn. What has he got on his head? How is he holding it on? Do you think a bear could really get over a fence in this way? No, he could not. The picture is only to make you laugh. A bear can do a great many curious things, but he can not do this. Do you think a man, even, could go over a fence in this way, with a pumpkin on his head, and corn-stalks under his arm? Do you see the cornfield beyond the fence? I see another pumpkin in the picture besides the one that is on the bear's head. Do you see it? Do you see the vine where this pumpkin is growing? And the large leaves? Did you ever see a pumpkin growing in a garden? Do you see the shadow of the bear on the path before him? Do you like t...
