  • As You Like It

    William Shakespeare, Leah S. Marcus

    Paperback (W. W. Norton & Company, Oct. 28, 2011)
“All the world’s a stage.” Shakespeare’s beloved pastoral comedy is now available in a Norton Critical Edition. Since its return to the London stage in 1740, As You Like It has delighted theatergoers, readers, and critics. Its heroine, Rosalind, is one of Shakespeare’s greatest characters. The play’s Forest of Arden setting and its focus on the relationship between natural occurrences and things created by humans (Shakespeare collectively termed these “art”) provide us with access to debates in Renaissance England that relate to the ecological issues of our own time. This Norton Critical Edition is based on the 1623 First Folio text. It is accompanied by a note on the text, eight illustrations, six photographs, and explanatory annotations. “Sources and Contexts” includes, in its entirety, Shakespeare’s primary source for the play―Thomas Lodge’s popular prose romance Rosalynde (1590). Reading Shakespeare’s play with (and against) Lodge’s romance reveals striking similarities and fascinating differences, both large and small. An array of other readings focuses on the central areas of gender and ecology and includes works by Michel de Montaigne, Sir Thomas More, Thomas Bastard, George Gascoygne, and William Prynne. A rich “Criticism” section includes twenty-one commentaries on As You Like It spanning four centuries. Contributors include, among others, Mrs. Anna Jameson, Clara Claiborne Park, Jean E. Howard, Marjorie Garber, James Shapiro, Valerie Traub, Jeffrey Masten, and Robert Smallwood. A Selected Bibliography is also included.

William Shakespeare, Patricia Lennox, James H. Lake

    Paperback (Focus, Oct. 1, 2010)
George Lyman Kittredge’s insightful editions of Shakespeare have endured in part because of his eclecticism, his diversity of interests, and his wide-ranging accomplishments, all of which are reflected in the valuable notes in each volume. These new editions have specific emphasis on the performance histories of the plays (on stage and screen). Features of each edition include: - The original introduction to the Kittredge Edition - Editor’s Introduction to the Focus Edition. An overview on major themes of the plays, and sections on the play’s performance history on stage and screen. - Explanatory Notes. The explanatory notes either expand on Kittredge’s superb glosses, or, in the case of plays for which he did not write notes, give the needed explanations for Shakespeare’s sometimes demanding language. - Performance notes. These appear separately and immediately below the textual footnotes and include discussions of noteworthy stagings of the plays, issues of interpretation, and film and stage choices. - How to read the play as Performance Section. A discussion of the written play vs. the play as performed and the various ways in which Shakespeare’s words allow the reader to envision the work "off the page." - Comprehensive Timeline. Covering major historical events (with brief annotations) as well as relevant details from Shakespeare’s life. Some of the Chronologies include time chronologies within the plays. - Topics for Discussion and Further Study Section. Critical Issues: Dealing with the text in a larger context and considerations of character, genre, language, and interpretative problems. Performance Issues: Problems and intricacies of staging the play connected to chief issues discussed in the Focus Editions’ Introduction. - Select Bibliography & Filmography Each New Kittredge edition also includes screen grabs from major productions, for comparison and scene study.

    William Shakespeare

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, March 8, 2017)
William Shakespeare (1564–1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor. He is generally considered the greatest dramatist of all time, the greatest English writer, and one of the greatest writers in any language. Shakespeare is best known for his plays, many written for his own acting troupe, which are still regularly staged today. As You Like It, or What You Will is one of Shakespeare’s pastoral comedies, written about 1599. As the non-specific title suggests, it is intended to have no deep significance; this is simply light-hearded fun. Set largely in an idealized countryside with idealized sheperds and renegade noblemen, it is most notable for its high wedding count (four) and for including three of Shakespeare’s most memorable characters: the jester Touchstone, the melancholy lord Jacques, and the sharp-witted Rosalind. This book is in the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic alphabet for writing English developed in the mid-19th century at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah).

    William Shakespeare

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Feb. 21, 2016)
As I remember, Adam, it was upon this fashion bequeathed me by will but poor a thousand crowns, and, as thou sayest, charged my brother, on his blessing, to breed me well: and there begins my sadness. My brother Jaques he keeps at school, and report speaks goldenly of his profit: for my part, he keeps me rustically at home, or, to speak more properly, stays me here at home unkept; for call you that keeping for a gentleman of my birth, that differs not from the stalling of an ox? His horses are bred better; for, besides that they are fair with their feeding, they are taught their manage, and to that end riders dearly hired: but I, his brother, gain nothing under him but growth; for the which his animals on his dunghills are as much bound to him as I. Besides this nothing that he so plentifully gives me, the something that nature gave me his countenance seems to take from me: he lets me feed with his hinds, bars me the place of a brother, and, as much as in him lies, mines my gentility with my education. This is it, Adam, that grieves me; and the spirit of my father, which I think is within me, begins to mutiny against this servitude: I will no longer endure it, though yet I know no wise remedy how to avoid it.
