  • Our Southern Highlanders: A Narrative of Adventure in the Southern Appalachians and a Study of Life Among the Mountaineers

    Horace Kephart, Ralph Roberts

Hardcover (Land of the Sky Books, Dec. 1, 2000)
This narrative of adventure in the southern Appalachians and study of the mountaineer life first appeared in 1913, becoming arguably the most significant book ever published about the Southern Mountains. Kephart's fascination with outdoor life and his interest in this mountainous region became his avocation -- he wrote numerous magazine articles for national periodicals of that day, including Field & Stream, National Sportsman, and Outing. This is the story of the southern mountain folk, as told by Kephart, said to be the man most responsible for the existence of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Using his numerous journals, he wrote first-hand observations of the mountains and people during his 10 years of travels through the Appalachians. The mountaineers are a unique people, a breed unto their own, and there is no other group quite like them anywhere on the planet. "They are original, " writes Kephart. "They are 'characters'."

  • Our Southern Highlanders: A Narrative of Adventure in the Southern Appalachians and a Study of Life Among the Mountaineers

    Horace Kephart

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Feb. 8, 2019)
Excerpt from Our Southern Highlanders: A Narrative of Adventure in the Southern Appalachians and a Study of Life Among the MountaineersLet us admit that there is just enough truth in this caricature to give It a point that will stick. Our typical mountaineer is lank, he is always unkempt, he is fond of toting a gun on his shoul der, and his curiosity about a stranger's name and business is promptly, though politely, out spoken; For the rest, he is a man of mystery. The great world outside his mountains knows almost as little about him as he does of it; and that is little indeed. News in order to reach him must be of such widespread interest as fairly to fall from heaven; correspondingly, scarce any, incidents of mountain life will leak out unless they be of sensational nature, such as the shoot ing of a revenue ofiicer in Carolina, the massacre of a Virginia court, or the outbreak of another feud in bloody Breathitt. And so, from the grim sameness of such reports, the world infers that battle, murder, and sudden death are com monplaces in Appalachia.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
