The second book of Rowdy's adventures on his ranch, the Circle C, in Indian Territory during the summer of 1900 is based on the true story of my grandfather's rescue of some gypsies who were being harassed by vigilantes. The gypsies dogs have been killed, but they have escaped with their wagons, draft horses, and some goats and sheep, plus several horses including a Lippizan. Rowdy and Jim are introduced to a new culture and their customs. Their Cherokee heritage stands them in good stead when it comes time to accept new people into their family circle. My grandmother rode Snowflake, the gift horse from the gypsies, as long as she remained on the ranch.
