  • The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs

    Charles Darwin

    eBook
Charles Darwin CollectionCharles Robert Darwin FRS was an English naturalist who realised and presented compelling evidence that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors, through the process he called natural selection. The fact that evolution occurs became accepted by the scientific community and much of the general public in his lifetime, while his theory of natural selection came to be widely seen as the primary explanation of the process of evolution in the 1930s, and now forms the basis of modern evolutionary theory. In modified form, Darwin’s scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, providing logical explanation for the diversity of life. This Collection of eBooks includes below Titles of this famous author:1) THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF CHARLES DARWIN.2) THE EFFECTS OF CROSS AND SELF-FERTILISATION IN THE VEGETABLE KINGDOM3) THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF FLOWERS ON PLANTS OF THE SAME SPECIES4) GEOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS OF VOLCANIC ISLANDS5) THE FORMATION OF VEGETABLE MOULD THROUGH THE ACTION OF WORMS6) THE EXPRESSION OF EMOTION IN MAN AND ANIMALS7) GEOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS ON SOUTH AMERICA8) INSECTIVOROUS PLANTS9) THE DESCENT OF MAN BY CHARLES DARWIN10) MOVEMENTS AND HABITS OF CLIMBING PLANTS11) ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES12) THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES13) THE POWER OF MOVEMENT IN PLANTS14) THE VARIATION OF ANIMALS AND PLANTS UNDER DOMESTICATION VOLUME 115) THE VARIATION OF ANIMALS AND PLANTS UNDER DOMESTICATION VOLUME 216) THE VARIATION OF ANIMALS AND PLANTS 17) THE VOYAGE OF THE BEAGLE18) THE STRUCTURE AND DISTRIBUTION OF CORAL REEFS

  • The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs

    Charles Darwin

Paperback (University of California, March 15, 1962)
FROM THE BACK COVER ___ In 1842, when he first published this volume, Darwin was a little-known naturalist who had sailed around the world on H. M. S. Beagle. He had been impressed by the strange beauty and puzzling symmetry of the coral isles, with their massive foundations made up of aggregated minute coral shells. And he was fascinated by the problem of their origins. Having found that the coral animals live only at restricted depths, Darwin was led to the theory that forms the heart of this book: the mid-ocean reefs have grown up as underlying islands subsided beneath the sea. This contention, refined to deal with fringing and barrier reefs, was questioned and requestioned for more than a hundred years; only through recent deep drillings at Eniwetok did Darwin's hypothesis finally receive experimental verification. Republication of his elegant solution to the mysterious origins of the reefs is therefore especially appropriate now. The book remains a typical Darwin work-neat, modest, painstaking-and an outstanding scientific classic. ___ H. W. MENARD, who contributed the foreword, is Professor of Geology at the University of California, San Diego campus, and an authority on marine geology.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
