On May 4, 1965, Thornton Wilder became the first recipient of the Nation Book Committee's National Medal for Literature in a ceremony held in the East Room of the White House. Mr. Wilder's two best-known works, Our Town and The Bridge of San Luis Rey, have both been awarded Pulitzer Prizes. In addition, he has been accorded an Honorary M.B.E. from England; the French Legion of Honor; the Peach Prize from the publishers of West Germany; a Metal of Honor from Austria; the Gold Metal for fiction of the American Academy of Arts and Letters; and, in 1963, the Presidential Medal for Freedom.
