This book is one of a series which provides an illustrated introduction to different countries of the world. The books highlight the distinctive features of each country, enabling children to compare and contrast their lives with those of other lands and cultures. They also explain some of the social, economic and environmental issues facing each country today. This volume is concerned with life in West Germany, discussing its recent turbulent past as well as the present political situation. Also examined are the main activities in industry and agriculture, the variations in scenery, the wildlife and the resources of the country. The day-to-day life of West Germans is examined with information regarding religion, shopping and food, customs and festivals, education and sport and family life. Finally the author looks at current issues in West Germany with particular regard to environmental problems, pollution, and West Germany's position in Europe.
