  • The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales from the Old French

Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, Roe Kendall, Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Audible Audiobook (Blackstone Audio, Inc., Jan. 6, 2005)
Quiller-Couch translates four French fairy tales into English, some of which are perennial favorites, witness Disney's animated rendering of Beauty and the Beast or Jean Cocteau's critically acclaimed film version of the tale. (It was written by Mme Gabrielle de Villeneuve, who died in 1755 and lives only by grace of this one of her several original romantic stories.) Other fairy tales included in this compilation are Charles Perrault's (1628-1703) The Sleeping Beauty, Bluebeard, and Cinderella. Arthur Quiller-Couch had this to say regarding his translation of these tales: "My own share in this volume is, perhaps, less easily defended. I began by translating Perrault's tales, very nearly word for word; because to me his style has always seemed nearly perfect for its purpose; and the essence of 'style' in writing is propriety to its purpose."
  • The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales

    Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, Edmund Dulac

Hardcover (Calla Editions, Sept. 14, 2011)
This sumptuous volume is a welcome follow-up to the earlier Calla publication of Dulac's Stories from Hans Christian Andersen. Edmund Dulac was second only to Arthur Rackham in his sensitivity to the world of fairy tales, and his style is at once exotic and elegant. The present edition contains four tales: "The Sleeping Beauty," "Blue Beard," "Cinderella," and "Beauty and the Beast" in artful retelling, but the main feature of the book is the generous offering of 30 full-page color plates in Dulac's inimitable style. Additional design elements make this Calla edition a keepsake for readers and collectors alike.

Paperback (Dodo Press, April 17, 2009)
Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch (1863-1944) was a Cornish writer, who published under the pen name of Q. He published his Dead Man's Rock (a romance in the vein of Stevenson's Treasure Island) in 1887, and he followed this up with Troy Town (1888) and The Splendid Spur (1889). After some journalistic experience in London, mainly as a contributor to the Speaker, in 1891 he settled at Fowey in Cornwall. He published in 1896 a series of critical articles, Adventures in Criticism, and in 1898 he completed Robert Louis Stevenson's unfinished novel, St Ives. With the exception of the parodies entitled Green Bays (1893), his poetical work is contained in Poems and Ballads (1896). In 1895 he published an anthology from the 16th and 17th-century English lyrists, The Golden Pomp, followed in 1900 by an equally successful Oxford Book of English Verse, 1250-1900 (1900). His later novels include: The Blue Pavilions (1891), The Ship of Stars (1899), Hetty Wesley (1903), The Adventures of Harry Revel (1903), Fort Amity (1904), The Shining Ferry (1905) and Sir John Constantine (1906).

    A.T. Quiller-Couch, Roe Kendall

MP3 CD (Blackstone Audio, Inc., July 1, 1999)
[Read in English by Roe Kendall] Quiller-Couch here gives us these four fairy tales that have been perennial favorites for centuries. The first three fairy tales are 'The Sleeping Beauty,''Blue Beard,' and 'Cinderella,' all three of which were popularized in France by Charles Perrault in 1697 in his Tales of Mother Goose. The last tale in the compilation is 'Beauty and the Beast,' this version attributed to Gabrielle de Villeneuve, who published it in 1740 and 1756. Quiller-Couch had this to say regarding his translation of these tales: I began by translating Perrault' s tales, very nearly word for word....the translations, when finished, did not satisfy me, and so I turned back to the beginning and have rewritten the stories in my own way, which (as you may say with the Irish butler) may not be the best claret, but 'tis the best we ve got....
