    Lille Greenough of Cambridge, Mass. married Charles Mouton and lived in Paris during the Second Empire and afterwards, writing letters about the musical (she was a singer) and social life to her mother and an aunt. The letters were preserved and made into a book. Mrs. Mouton married M. de Hegermann-Lindencrone after the death of Mr. Mouton.

    Lillie De Hegermann-Lindencrone, (1844-1928), born Lillie Greenough in Cambridge, Massachusetts and later known as Lillie Moulton, was a trained singer, and latterly a diplomat's wife noted for publishing in 1913 a book of letters describing The Sunny Side of Diplomatic Life, 1875-1912. She was, by her own description, a friend and favourite of a number of contemporary royal houses, being intimate with Christian IX of Denmark and his queen Louise of Hesse-Kassel; Umberto I of Italy and his queen Margherita of Savoy, Oscar II of Sweden and his queen Sofia of Nassau; and the many offspring and relations of these families. She was also acquainted with many of the famous composers of her day, including Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, and Gioacchino Rossini.

Her letters give a vivid picture of the court of the Napoleon III, among other experiences recorded. Lillie de Hegermann-Lindencrone's letters form a fascinating glimpse at the high society, the men and women of greatest talent, power, wealth and influence of her day. There are politicians and statesmen, bankers, businessmen etc. but also all the most important figures in the world of music of the second half of the 19th century. This includes such great figures as Wagner, Liszt, Auber, Gounod, and Rossini. Many of her letters give us intimate glimpses into the lives of these people.
