  • Mother Goose or the Old Nursery Rhymes - Illustrated by Kate Greenaway

    Kate Greenaway

eBook (Pook Press, April 16, 2013)
Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes is a collection of fairy tales and nursery rhymes, penned by the legendary (and only some claim imaginary), ‘Mother Goose.’ They have inspired many folklorists and illustrators (including Charles Perrault, Arthur Rackham, Jessie Willcox-Smith and Jennie Harbour) – as well as countless generations of children and parents. Greenaway’s Mother Goose was originally published in 1881, to instant critical acclaim.Kate Greenaway (1846 – 1901), was a children’s book illustrator and writer, and remains one of the most popular illustrators of all time. Edmund Evans produced her first book (‘Under the Window’) in 1879, which was an instant best-seller and cemented her pre-eminent position. Her charming children in quaint costumes and idyllic scenes captured the imagination of the contemporary public – and continue to delight over a century after their initial publication. The artwork is presented in conjunction with the ‘Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes’ – both aspects further refining and elucidating the other.Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

Kate Greenaway's 'Mother Goose Or The Old Nursery Rhymes' was originally published in 1881, it contains many nursery rhymes and tales together with her beautiful illustrations. About the Illustrator: Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) was one of the earliest contributors to children's literature and, along with her contemporaries Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott, was amongst the most influential illustrators in the development of children's colour picture books. Her collaboration in 1876 with Edmund Evans who reproduced her paintings using hand-engraved wood blocks brought her much popularity. She has enchanted people, young and old, for over one hundred years with her watercolour illustrations of sweet, charming eighteenth century children with their quaint costumes and idyllic scenes. In recognition of her lifetime work, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals of Great Britain established an award in her name in 1955 and to receive the Kate Greenaway Medal today is considered the highest accolade a British illustrator can be given.
  • Kate Greenaway’s Mother Goose

    Kate Greenaway, James Thorpe

Hardcover (Huntington Library Press, Aug. 15, 2006)
Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) was one of the most popular British book illustrators of the Victorian era. A contemporary of Randolph Caldecott and Walter Crane, she attracted a wide audience in the United States and England, and many of her books were even translated into German and French. One of Greenaway's early successes was Mother Goose, or the Old Nursery Rhymes, first published in 1881, featuring such favorite poems as "Little Jack Horner," "Little Bo Peep," and "Jack and Jill" paired with whimsical illustrations of children playing in an idyllic countryside. Her enchanting watercolors evoked the urban Victorian reader's nostalgia for the rural life of earlier times and echoed Greenaway's own longing to retreat to a more tranquil setting than her native London. This new edition of Kate Greenaway's Mother Goose reproduces illustrations from the rare 1881 edition in the Huntington Library's collections. The Huntington owns an extensive collection of books illustrated by Greenaway, several of her manuscripts, and nearly one hundred of her original drawings.
