  • Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

    M. R. James

eBook (Open Road Media Mystery & Thriller, Jan. 27, 2015)
Sometimes the greatest horrors lurk in the most mundane places This collection features some of M. R. James’s greatest tales of the supernatural world crossing over into our own. In “Number 13,” an inn that previously belonged to an alchemist changes dimensions in the night. “The Mezzotint” features a painting of a house reenacting a gruesome scene from the house’s history. In “The Treasure of Abbot Thomas,” an antiquary who has discovered the location of a treasure gets far more than he bargained for. James’s tales of the terror that hides beneath the prosaic continue to stun more than a century after they were written. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

    M. R. James, David; Stephen Timson; Critchlow, Naxos AudioBooks

Audiobook (Naxos AudioBooks, Dec. 9, 2010)
The powerful sense of evil – darkness, creepy hairy presences, cloaks, hoods, talons and tentacles – pervades these classic ghost stories by M.R. James. A Cambridge scholar himself, James explored what happens when academics dabble in things they don’t understand and unleash forces of which they know nothing. The titles in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary range from witchcraft to the occult, and tap into our primal fear of things that go bump in the night. They are recognised as the best of their genre.

How is this book unique?Font adjustments & biography includedUnabridged (100% Original content)IllustratedAbout Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by Montague Rhodes JamesGhost Stories of an Antiquary is the title of Montague Rhodes James first collection of ghost stories. Montague Rhodes James (1862–1936) was a paleographer and medievalist scholar; Provost of King's College, Cambridge. He wrote many of his ghost stories to be read aloud in the long tradition of spooky Christmas Eve tales. By contrast to the gothic tales of predecessors, James's stories often use rural settings, with a quiet, scholarly protagonist getting caught up in the activities of supernatural forces. The details of horror are almost never explicit, the stories relying on a gentle, bucolic background to emphasise the awfulness of the otherworldly intrusions. His tales can thus be said to have derived the subgenre of the antiquarian ghost story. Plot Summary: Two men in a smoking-room were talking of their private-school days. At our school, one said, we had a ghost's footmark on the staircase. What was it like? Oh very unconvincing. Just the shape of a shoe with a square toe if I remember right.

The stories themselves do not make any very exalted claim. If any of them succeed in causing their readers to feel pleasantly uncomfortable when walking along a solitary road at nightfall, or sitting over a dying fire in the small hours, my purpose in writing them will have been attained.
