Excerpt from Sketches and Anecdotes of Animal LifeIn order, therefore, to compensate in some degree for that deficiency, a portion of those sketches and anecdotes which were originally intended to have been inserted in the first work, have been brought together in a separate volume.Even in these pages, which are devoted exclusively to the history of animals, space has failed; and it has been found necessary to postpone several quadru peds, such as the elephant, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, and many others, to another occasion.
