  • Alice's Adventures Under Ground

    Lewis Carroll

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Jan. 7, 2016)
This is the handwritten book that Carroll wrote for private use before being urged to develop it later into Alice in Wonderland. It was generously meant to entertain his family and friends. When a sick child in a hospital enjoyed it so much, the mother wrote him saying it had distracted her for a bit from her pain and led eventually to Carroll expanding the story.

  • Alice's Adventures Under Ground

    Lewis Carroll, Charles Santore

Hardcover (Cider Mill Press, Sept. 8, 2015)
In celebration of the story’s 150th anniversary, this elegant new collector’s edition of Alice’s Adventures Underground features never-before-seen drawings from renowned artist Charles Santore, and an introduction by revered literary scholar, Michael Patrick Hearn. When Lewis Carroll first put pen to paper and wrote what would become Alice in Wonderland, he provisionally titled the story “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground,” and accompanied the text with sketches to bring his story to life. Now, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the book’s first publication in 1865, we are publishing that original story, in a faithful and unabridged adaptation, under its original title. Like that first hand-written draft, this stunning new collector’s edition features never-before-seen drawings throughout the story by celebrated New York Times bestselling artist Charles Santore (The Wizard of Oz, The Night Before Christmas), and an introduction from the premier authority on children’s literature, Michael Patrick Hearn.
  • Alice's Adventures Under Ground: The Original Manuscript

    Lewis Carroll

Hardcover (British Library Publishing, Oct. 1, 2019)
One "golden afternoon" in Oxford, in July 1862, the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, accompanied three young sisters, Lorina, Alice, and Edith, on a boating trip. To keep the children amused, Dodgson, began to tell a tale about an inquisitive youngster called Alice, and her escapades in an underground world. Dodgson's story, later revised and illustrated by John Tenniel, would go on to become one of the most famous and best-loved children's books of all time—published as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, under the pen name Lewis Carroll. However, the original tale—Alice's Adventures Under Ground—remains less well-known. In this facsimile edition of Dodgson's manuscript—now one of the British Library's most treasured possessions—with its accompanying commentary by former British Library curator Sally Brown, modern readers can enjoy the expressive story as it was first told.
  • Alice's Adventures Underground

    Lewis Carrol

    eBook (, July 11, 2014)
In 1864, Lewis Carroll sent "Alice's Adventures Under Ground," a handwritten and illustrated manuscript, as a gift to Alice Liddell, the daughter of his Oxford dean. This formed the basis for Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland"--introducing timeless characters such as Alice, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, and the Gryphon--although it differs considerably from the later work, with the author himself approving its publication in 1886. "Alice's Adventures Under Ground" provides an enchanting glimpse into Carroll's imaginative process, and deserves to be ranked as a classic for all ages in its own right. This manuscript facsimile is a must-read for any Alice fans. With a brief but helpful introduction by Carroll scholar Martin Gardener, this book gives wonderful insight to the Alice process that Carroll began as an oral tale.
