    Audiobook (A.R.N. Publications, Aug. 14, 2017)
Something strange is afoot at the Paris Opera House. When staff and performers spot a skeleton dressed in dinner attire, tales of the opera house ghost begin to surface. The new manager dismisses the stories as overactive imaginations, but chaos ensues, and encounters with the phantom become increasingly frightening. Who is the mysterious phantom that haunts the theater after the crowds have left for the night? How can he enter locked rooms and get from place to place so quickly? What is his connection to the beautiful and talented Christine? Gaston Leroux injects the perfect combination of gothic tension and horror in his classic tale of the dark and foreboding. First published in 1909 in serial format, The Phantom of the Opera quickly became one of the most beloved gothic tales of the Victorian era, earning its place as one of the greatest stories of all time.

Includes 80 still images and the poster from the 1929 film starring Lon Chaney. Written like a journal investigating mysterious events involving the "Opera ghost" Erik and the young Swedish opera singer Christine Daaé and her love Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagny. Extract from the book: "The Opera ghost really existed. He was not, as was long believed, a creature of the imagination of the artists, the superstition of the managers, or a product of the absurd and impressionable brains of the young ladies of the ballet, their mothers, the box-keepers, the cloak-room attendants or the concierge. Yes, he existed in flesh and blood, although he assumed the complete appearance of a real phantom; that is to say, of a spectral shade."

This edition includes 10 illustrations. The popularity of The Phantom of the Opera is enormous, thanks to the smash hit Broadway musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Yet the novel, by French writer Gaston Leroux, was initially a poor seller at its publication in the early part of the 20th century. Despite this, readers have come to appreciate the thrills and horrific chills which envelope the near-fatal love triangle between the horribly disfigured Erik, the beautiful chorus girl Christine and her childhood friend Raoul. Driven to madness by his obsession for Christine, Erik becomes the opera house ghost, turning the theater into a world of nightmare.

It was first published as a serialisation in "Le Gaulois" from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. Initially, the story sold very poorly upon publication in book form and was even out of print several times during the twentieth century; it is overshadowed by the success of its various film and stage adaptations. The most notable of these were the 1925 film depiction, Ken Hill's 1976 musical at the Theatre Royal Stratford East followed ten years later by Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical, and Lloyd Webber and Joel Schumacher's 2004 film.

First published in French as a serial in 1909, "The Phantom of the Opera" is a riveting story that revolves around the young, Swedish Christine Daaé. Her father, a famous musician, dies, and she is raised in the Paris Opera House with his dying promise of a protective angel of music to guide her. After a time at the opera house, she begins hearing a voice, who eventually teaches her how to sing beautifully. All goes well until Christine's childhood friend Raoul comes to visit his parents, who are patrons of the opera, and he sees Christine when she begins successfully singing on the stage. The voice, who is the deformed, murderous 'ghost' of the opera house named Erik, however, grows violent in his terrible jealousy, until Christine suddenly disappears. The phantom is in love, but it can only spell disaster. Leroux's work, with characters ranging from the spoiled prima donna Carlotta to the mysterious Persian from Erik's past, has been immortalized by memorable adaptations. Despite this, it remains a remarkable piece of Gothic horror literature in and of itself, deeper and darker than any version that follows.
