THE HAT and THE CATSYNOPSIS it's a puss in utes!A tale about Pepper, a very large tomcat, and his unexpected adventure into the Marine Corps' way of life via boot camp training.Early one fateful morning Pepper was at the wrong place at the wrong time - investigating some curious yellow footprints outside Recruit Receiving at Parris Island, SC. Pepper had gone to meet his cousin Danny on the incoming bus. When the bus arrived and Danny failed to appear, the Marine drill instructors thought the tomcat was just a really weird recruit and put him through training. The poor cat insisted he was an "accidental recruit," but the Marines didn't believe him. The agreed that the recruiters had sent them some peculiar recruits before but this one took the cake.It was up to the drill instructors to do whatever was necessary to make this unusual recruit into the best Marine possible. Failure to do the impossible was not in their genes.Pepper's trials and tribulations continued when the drill instructors hastily led him and the other scared recruits to the barber. The barber had a hard time deciding where to stop shaving Pepper because he was, naturally, covered with hair from head to claw! Next came the dreaded urinalysis test and the cat did what came naturally - he covered it up! The exasperated drill instructors didn't know whether they should laugh or cry at the absurd recruit. He demanded their full attention and that's exactly what he got. At the end of each day, the drill instructors would share their frustration and laughs about what their "accidental recruit" had done that day. He was the biggest challenge they'd ever had but they were determined to win the battle and put their unusual recruit through training. To say that the drill instructors and the cat make the best of a bad situation would be an understatement. Pepper must follow the exact same training schedule as the "real" recruits. You'll find his solutions comical as well as worthy of a tear here and there as he strives to make his mistress proud - while, in his heart of hearts, he keeps hoping and dreaming that she and his loyal Pet Pals will somehow/sometime rescue him from his incarceration. While Pepper is going through boot training, his brother, Bubba Billy is busily taking Pepper's place as the territorial Alpha Cat. He has his own set of funny priorities that go awry as he and the Pet Pals conjure up a plan to rescue their leader.Pepper's mistress, Jessie Lee, is a state of denial that her beloved tomcat won't come home. Because Bubba Billy is hiding Pepper's letters to his mistress, she doesn't know where he is; and boot training at Parris Island is certainly not on her list of possibilities! She enlists fellow members of the local AMVETs to help in the search and to commiserate with. Pepper's boot training and the Pet Pal's rescue efforts move at a feverish pace as each character has his or her own agenda items to push forward during the tomcat's incarceration at Parris Island Recruit Depot. A great story to share with the kids so they can see, through the tomcat's adventure, what mom, dad or a sibling went through in the U.S. Marine Corps boot training.
