Excerpt from The Splendid Spur: Being Memoirs of the Adventures of Mr. John Marvel, a Servant of His Late Majesty King Charles I., In the Years 1642-3: Written by Himself, and Edited in Modern EnglishThe campaign in the west was a side-issue and did not engage the main bodies of the army on either side. The west and south-west were, on the whole, loyal to the King, and the Royalist victories (though hard-won, owing to lack of equipment) were able to consolidate this loyalty. Elsewhere Cromwell was mustering the Parlia mentary strength to defeat the Royal army at Marston Moor (1644) and Naseby after which Fairfax marched west and before long Taunton, Bristol and Bridgwater were captured and the King's troops in Cornwall were dispersed.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
