  • The Blind Colt

    Glen Rounds

Hardcover (Holiday House, March 15, 1969)
this book is based on a true event, but written for children. IT was the practice back in the early days, (1940's and earlier) to shoot horses borne blind or otherwise not in perfect condition at birth. BUT this one horse, though blind, was not shot, and instead went on to live a happy life. Despite the blindness, this colt was smart and got along just fine and had quite an adventure. It is a lesson for all young people, especaily for those with handicaps, about not giving up and living fullfilled lives. This was renewed in publication by its author, Glenn Rounds, from Rapid City, South Dakota for the Weekly Reader Book series. This is a rare and collectible book, also perfect for children and teenagers, age 6 through 13 (or precoscious 5 year olds). Synopsis: Shortly after the mare gives birth to the little colt, she begins to worry. She senses that there is something strange even though the colt is lively and playful. the mare is right. The little colt is blind. how will the colt be able to handle the wolves, rattlesnakes, and other dangers on the Dakota plains? It teaches children and youth about living with handicaps.
