    Jules Verne, Cronos Classics

eBook (Cronos Classics, July 22, 2017)
This book contains now several HTML tables of contents that will make reading a real pleasure!Facing the Flag or For the Flag is a patriotic novel by Jules Verne. Like The Begum's Millions which Verne published in 1879 , it has the theme of France and the entire world threatened by a super-weapon (what would now be called a weapon of mass destruction) with the threat finally overcome through the force of French patriotism. It can be considered one of the first books dealing with problems which was to become paramount half a century after its publication: brilliant scientists discovering new weapons of great destructive power, whose full utilisation might literally destroy the world; the competition between various powers to obtain control of such weapons; and also the efforts of ruthless non-state groups to have it.

  • Facing The Flag

    Jules Verne, Frances Cashel Hoey

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Oct. 19, 2017)
Thomas Roch, a brilliant French inventor, has designed the Fulgurator, a weapon so powerful that "the state which acquired it would become absolute master of earth and ocean." However, unable to sell his unproven idea to France or any other government, Roch begins to lose his sanity, becoming bitter, megalomaniacal and paranoid. The United States Government reacts by tucking him away at a luxurious asylum in New Bern, North Carolina, where he is visited by one "Count d'Artigas"—actually Ker Karraje, a notorious pirate of Malagasy origin. His heterogeneous crew is drawn from "escaped convicts, military and naval deserters, and the scum of Europe."

  • Facing The Flag

    Jules Verne

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 16, 2012)
Volume 42 of 54 of Jules Verne's "Extraordinary Voyages", first printed in 1897. “Facing the Flag” is one of the earliest stories dealing with a very modern theme: the development of weapons of mass destruction, and the international community's attempts to reconcile this. Thomas Roch, a celebrated inventor, has supposedly created a weapon so devastating that he demands enormous amounts of money to contract it to the nations of the world. However, his acclamations are not only heard by the sovereign nations; his superweapon is also intently sought after by a villianous mind, striking from his secret island fortress... This particular edition is reproduced from English-edition public works, and is presented simply with an emphasis on straightforward presentation, attractiveness and continuity of appearance, with each title in the "Extraordinary Voyages" sporting a journal-style brown cover accompanied by a cover illustration and quote from the text on the back cover.

  • Facing the Flag

    Jules Verne

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Jan. 6, 2016)
Jules Verne (1828-1905) is one of the most recognizable names in Western literature, coming to be known as one of the Fathers of Science-Fiction. Although he studied to be a lawyer and held stock trading jobs, he quickly learned that he had a knack for weaving adventurous stories of travels and expeditions. It didn’t hurt that one of his teachers may have been inventor Brutus de Villeroi, who created the first submarine for the U.S. Navy. Verne wrote about air travel and space travel 50 years before either was possible.
