Here for your delectation is the SPECTACULAR & RARE------------------BETSY AND TACY GO DOWNTOWN by Maud Hart Lovelace, Illustrated by Lisl Weil I don't know why you don't take me downtown like you got anywhere better to be...... Betsy and Tacy Go Downtown (1943) is the fourth volume in the Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace. The Betsy-Tacy Series is a collection of books written by Maud Hart Lovelace between 1940 and 1955. The books are written at progressively more difficult reading levels as the characters age. They follow the adventures of Betsy Ray and her friends and family from the time that Betsy turns five until she is in her early twenties. They take place in the very late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the series progresses, the cast of characters grows larger and the plots progress to reflect the changing concerns of the characters. In the first two books, the action is mainly confined to the "Hill Street" neighborhood that is home to the three main characters, Betsy, Tacy, and Tib. In books three and four, the girls' world becomes a bit larger and they have several adventures in new parts of town. PLUS----there are L-O-A-D-S of illustrations!! NOT TO BE MISSED!!! Betsy, Tacy, and Tib are now old enough to do a lot of things...including going bobsledding and venturing into town on their own. They discover the joys of the public library, riding in a horseless carriage, and the theater. And as if it weren't enough to see a real play, they find themselves acting in one. They find a new friend, Mrs. Poppy, whose husband is the manager of the theater. Although Mrs. Poppy lives in a beautiful house with red carpets, gold chairs, and lace curtains, Betsy discovers that she is lonely just the same. But the three girls are going to make sure that changes.
