While on a cross-country train trip, Jesse slips away from the sleeper and visits the engineer as he drives the train though the darkness, past the wild animals.

Jesse and her mother are travelling on the night train when Jesse asks who is driving the train. Her mother replies that it is the engineer who drives the train and suggests she goes to sleep. But Jesse does not sleep. Instead she visits the engineer, and takes him a chicken leg and milk.
