  • The Voyage

    Robert Vescio, Andrea Edmonds

Hardcover (EK Books, Nov. 12, 2019)
Displaced by war and conflict, a refugee family sets out on a voyage into the unknown. Told in only a few words (one word per page) this is the powerful story of a family fleeing their war-torn country and making a dangerous trip across the ocean to a new life in a new land. ‘Chaos’ begins the story, as the family escapes. ‘Wild’ is the midway point, as the small boat battles through a storm. ‘Companion’ marks the sighting of a whale that briefly keeps them company as their voyage continues. ‘Beauty’ is the sight of a green, beautiful land ahead of them. ‘Safe’ is the beginning of their new life in their new home. Simple, yet evocative, The Voyage gives new meaning to the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words," as Robert Vescio’s sparse text and Andrea Edmond’s beautiful illustrations encourage young readers to create their own background story and thus identify more deeply with the plight of refugees and those less fortunate.

  • The Voyage

    Veronica Salinas, Camilla Engman

Hardcover (Groundwood Books, Sept. 17, 2013)
In this delightful picture book, a small duck finds himself in a place full of unusual creatures who speak an unfamiliar language. Eventually, he meets an animal whose big feet are just like his own. And with a friend by his side, he soon can feel at home. First published in Norway in 2012, this deceptively simple book about adapting to new situations will appeal to children who are just starting school or daycare, children who are about to move to a new home, or children who are learning a new language. The illustrations are gently humorous, while the simple text affirms the importance of knowing who you are and being open to change. Without making unrealistic promises, this story reassures children that, with time, they can adapt to any new environment and make new friends to explore it with. And if, as happens to the little duck in this story, those new friends have to leave, the child, like the little duck, will be able to greet the next wave of newcomers with compassion and generosity.

Jeana Yeager, Dick Rutan, Phil Patton

Hardcover (Adventure Library, June 15, 2001)
It is, so far as I know, unprecedented that a poet of W.H. Auden's stature would single out a mountaineering book for special praise. But when David Roberts published his second book Auden wrote: "David Roberts has already written one excellent book, The Mountain of My Fear; Deborah, in my opinion is even finer." "Never, before or since," Jon Krakauer points out, "has an author of climbing books been taken so seriously." Roberts burst onto the scene in 1968 with a book he had written in nine days — yes, nine days! — as a graduate student. In 1970, Deborah followed, and together these two books changed the literature of mountaineering forever. Roberts wrote with poignant intensity, not just about what happened on the mountain, but about his friendship with a climbing companion, Don Jensen. His narratives were deeply personal. He was interested in the nature of friendship, how it changes or endures under pressure, and what happens to the relationship when each person becomes totally dependent on the other for survival.
