Growing up in a government-controlled settlement, in the aftermath of nuclear war, fifteen-year-old Mary Beth Johnson, has learned to survive the post-apocalyptic terrain by learning three important rules: blend in when necessary, put family first, and be bold and brave when all else fails. When the general of the settlement comes to the house one day bearing bad news, Mary Beth decides to face the wilderness of the barren Colorado terrain rather than let her family starve to death. Mutated by the radiation has always marked her as different from the others in her settlement, so leaving the settlement isnât a hard decision to make; however, what she faces at the gates isnât what she thought she would be facing.Travelling through the state wonât be easy, as she soon learns, and it gets harder when an unexpected person lands in her path. The lullaby sang to her as a child pushes her to climb higher and higher into the mountains, something telling her that it isnât as bad as it seems. Reaching the top, Mary Beth finds out that the lullaby sheâs been keeping alive isnât as dead as she once thought it was.
