  • You Are Never Alone

    Elin Kelsey, Soyeon Kim

    Hardcover (Owlkids, April 15, 2019)
From the creators of You Are Stardust and Wild Ideas comes a new picture book that explores how humans are inextricably connected to nature. This book draws examples from the clouds and the cosmos, the seafloor and the surface of our skin, to show how we are never alone: we are always surrounded and supported by nature. Whether it’s gravity holding us tight; our lungs breathing oxygen synthesized by plants; the countless microorganisms that build our immunity; or the whales whose waste fertilizes the plankton that feed the fish we eat: nature touches every aspect of how we live. Using lyrical text grounded in current science alongside detailed diorama art, this informational picture book presents the idea that we thrive through connections to the land and sea and sky, and togetherness is key to nature. It encourages inquiry-based learning, inviting readers to wonder, ask questions, observe the natural world, and engage with big ideas. An author’s note at the end offers more insight into the research behind the text.

  • Never Alone

    Ted Manzer

Paperback (Christian Faith Publishing, Inc., April 18, 2017)
The stall warning horn screeched for what seemed like an eternity, and young Carl thought the whole plane was going to fall apart. Ice covered the wings and fuselage, and it was only a matter of time before the weight would force the plane down. He felt the crunch of windshield glass, as the seaplane came to rest in a rocky ravine. Carl knew fear was not a luxury he could have when he saw his father's blood. Never Alone is a throwback coming-of-age story. The plot bears no resemblance, but the manuscript's emotional intensity is similar to that of Old Yeller, The Yearling, and Where the Red Fern Grows. Another major difference is the overwhelming influence of God in Never Alone. Carl finds himself in a lonely harsh environment, but his faith in the Lord helps him embrace it. He learns to trust the Lord and realize God is in control of everything. Without faith, he has no chance. This makes it possible for him to survive that environment and find a way to deal with other problems he may face.

Riley and John are siblings whose parents have divorced. Riley helps her little brother, John, cope by discovering the positive side and “double blessings” of having two families, yet remaining one. This faith-based book explores what young children may think about when their parents separate or divorce, proving that children are wiser and more resilient then adults may realize. The first book in the “Never Alone” series focuses on separation and divorce and its impact on children. With half of American marriages ending in divorce or separation, children are often greatly affected. Written from a child’s perspective, “Never Alone” focuses on understanding that divorce and separation aren’t just adult issues. Sometimes, it takes other children in their “little village” to help them process their experience and realize that they are never alone. They have family and friends to help them along the way.
