It continues the story that began in DREAMING OF CASSIE and CASSIE CORNERED. Fitz Crawford, a typical teen, struggles to keep some sense of normalcy in his life as he goes to school, hangs out with his best friend, deals with normal teen crushes, and tries desperately to keep from turning into a mad, ravenous killing machine every time his heartbeat gets faster than a crawl. Here is a preview:He leaned back against the white gazebo post, staring at Cassie’s front door. Hers was a simple house, two stories, cracker box style, but well-kept and classy. There was already a pumpkin on the porch steps, but it wasn’t lit and upstairs, in Cassie’s bedroom, little orange lights blinked around her windows. He watched her shadow flit back and forth, pacing, the other lights in the house dark. Were her parents already asleep? There was no car in the drive, so… maybe her Dad was a traveling salesman or something. Or maybe her Mom was. The rain came down, his legs cooled off and Fitz must have dozed off for a moment or two because suddenly there was Snort, snack cake wrappers crackling and the ice in a 64-ounce cup of soda sloshing around.“This should get you back up to speed,” he said, handing over a bag full of junk food and the giant soda. Fitz immediately sucked on the straw, draining a quarter of the sweet soda before gasping for breath. “Thanks, Snort, I owe you.” He returned to the soda, the sugar filling his cells and bringing him back to life. “You keep saying that,” Snort joked, snatching a single candy bar for himself, “but I don’t see any payoff yet.”Fitz choked down a laugh, putting down the soda and grabbing a chocolate frosted cupcake and downing it in two bites. There were three more in the bag and he ate them all, one after the other, chasing them down with soda, sweet soda, until the cup was dry and he slumped back against the gazebo railing, eyelids fluttering with the sweet sugar rush.“You think I put back all the calories I burned?” Fitz asked, voice no longer so hoarse and husky.“And then some,” Snort snorted around the last bite of his candy bar.

She stared at Ruby; she really was exotically stunning, although her amber eyes seemed to be soaked with sadness. She had three rings through her left nostril and two rings in her lower lip. Surprisingly, they added to her beauty. “I want you to stay away from Jared,” she said. “We were supposed to be married you know.”“I can’t do that Ruby,” said Emily. “I love him.”“Well that makes two of us then,” said Ruby. For the first time, her voice was just as sad as it was haunting and Emily stopped walking and turned to look closely at the other girl. The two of them stood staring at each other. “You won’t win, Emily. Take this as a friendly warning,” said Ruby. “Take the train back to London and forget about Jared. He belongs to our pack and we want him to return to us.” Ruby turned and walked away, she did not look back; but Emily had heard something in her voice. It was lack of conviction, even desperation, and if gave Emily hope beyond any she had experienced since the day she’d walked in on the two of them. She let her fear flow from her body. She shook from head to toe and hurried away from the river. She was still feeling better when she got back to the hotel room and found Jared’s note making it clear in no uncertain terms that they would never be together.

Suddenly a wolf appeared from within one of the alleyways; he roared loudly and began to approach.“Must be the mystic guard!” shouted Emily.“I don’t think so,” said Jared.Jared changed form and dropped down to the ground as he shifted. He lunged for the wolf and they began to fight. From another alleyway a smaller wolf appeared and then another. Emily stood glued to the spot, she was afraid. The wolves were attacking Jared and it all became a big blur. Emily still did not move, she was transfixed.
