  • Where is Baby Edward?

    Charlie Douglas

eBook (Get the kids to sleep.com, Feb. 28, 2018)
For ages 3-8 yrs. This story is designed to get your children to sleep at bedtime. Baby Edward becomes lost and the other elephants go on a journey to find him. Children are drawn in to the rhythmic and melodic nature of the adventure, and as the journey unfolds so do the tricks to lull the listener to sleep. In this story, the first of the series, the elephants go across the savanna, through the marshes, up a river and through a waterfall to a cave beyond to try and find the lost Baby Edward. The book uses a number of established techniques such as repeated melodic phrases (read in hushed, gentle tones), characters that yawn (studies have shown this to be contagious especially with children) and the occasional sound that is similar to “white noise” (like a waterfall or radio interference) which is widely used as a sleep aid for babies and likened to sounds experienced in the womb. Always start at the beginning of the story and if all goes to plan, you won't reach the end. Check the audio version for the most effective way of reading the story.

Hardcover (Peachtree Publishers, Oct. 1, 2013)
Babies love to hide. Beneath blankets, under tables, and behind chairs. And some babies like to hide in unexpected places. Like baby deer, who disappear in dappled spring sunlight. Or baby leopards, who scramble high in the African trees. Or baby elephants, who fade behind a forest of legs. But all hidden babies, no matter where they hide, can always be found-by their loving parents.

When turned, the flap changes the mother's expression from worried to delighted. Somehow, Mr. Taback is able to capture a mother's fond look on each of his animal creations. After having taught children of all ages both in the USA and in Chine, I've developed a profound passion for traveling and for teaching the Spanish language. Upon seeing the significance of having a culturally rich and globally interconnected life, I see great value in representing the lived experience of those who seek to expand themselves beyond their comfort zones. After having my daughter, I decided to promote the importance of early exposure to cultural, ethnic, linguistic values and so much more that one gains from exploring foreign spaces and perspectives.

  • Where is My Baby?

    Harriet Ziefert, Simms Taback

Board book (Blue Apple Books, Feb. 1, 2002)
This deceptively simple, excitingly illustrated board book is based on a telling theme - that baby animals are known by names quite different from their parents (cow and calf, goat and kid). The text is perfectly targeted to the youngest children, who will thoroughly enjoy lifting the flaps and matching the baby animals to their mothers. The sumptuously colorful illustrations are sure to catch the rapt attention of the smallest child.
