  • The World Best Santa Claus: Santa Claus

A.Raha Gezersez, Hanna Chernus, Sara Gezersez

language (Ali Gezersez Raha, July 24, 2016)
The sky is dark and full of snow. A small bird flies over Tor’s head, hoping to find food, but returns disappointed to the snow-filled sky. Only Tor, a 15-year-old mentally retarded boy is outside, busy making a snowman. The cold air has given his face a nice red color. He is talking to himself at times, and looking towards Mrs.Anderson’s window, a lonely old woman that lives on the other side of the street. Mrs. Anderson wipes away the mist from the window with her trembling hands and watches the boy. Tor sees her, waves and points at his snowman and says:-”Mrs. Anderson, I’m going to make a snowman which is as big as me!”Mrs. Andersen cannot hear Tor. She walks towards the dining-room chairs, picks one of them up, places it in front of the window and sits down. Her face has just a touch of make-up. She has some unfinished knitting in her lap, but does not knit. The doorbell rings. Mrs. Anderson walks over to the door and opens it. Tor is standing outside, saying:-”The snowman is finished now. Come and see!”Tor runs towards his snowman. Mrs. Anderson remains standing in the doorway. She says: -”If you take good care of it, it will last all winter. Come inside, and we will have a snack. However, would you be a good boy and place this bundle of oats outside for me first?Tor places the oats outside. He takes a quick look up at the sky in case he should spot any birds. Then he walks towards the snowman, circles around it a couple of times. Takes a few small steps backwards, and suddenly he falls down on his back. As he gets up he is laughing loudly.Tor comes into the house and takes his shoes off. He says:-”Now he only needs a carrot for a nose and some food for him to eat throughout the winter. ”-”I have carrots. Come, I will get you one.”Mrs. Anderson goes to the refrigerator to find the carrot. Tor walks up to her, puts the carrot in his pocket and hugs Mrs. Anderson as hard as he can. She is surprised, and says with a friendly voice:-”Tor, wait here. I’ll get a towel so you can dry yourself off.”Tor sits down at the dining-room table. He starts flipping through a magazine, which is lying on the table. Mrs. Anderson returns with a towel in her hand, gives it to Tor and says:-”Here, use this so you don’t get the magazine all wet. Because, did you know that there is a picture of my son Alex, in there?Tor takes the towel, places it on top of his head walks over to the window and looks at his snowman.-”But Mrs.Anderson, what does it do at night?”Mrs. Anderson approaches the dining-room table, carrying a plate filled with cookies. Arranges the magazines and asks:-”Who?”-”The snowman, of course!”Mrs. Anderson thinks for a while, and then she says:-”He’s waiting for the morning to come.”Tor does not understand Mrs. Anderson’s answer at all. He places the towel on one of the chairs and walks over to Mrs. Andersen wh is sitting on the sofa. Mrs. Anderson is looking through the magazine to find the pictures of her son. When she finds them, she holds the magazine up so Tor can see.-”Look Tor. This is Alex. He is a model.”Tor watches the pictures for a while, and says:-”He looks so much like…”However, Tor cannot remember whom he looks like.-”Now I remember, he looks like my snowman.”Staring at the pictures, Mrs. Anderson replies:-”Yes, maybe he looks like your snowman.”Tor reaches out his hand, takes a cookie and puts it in his mouth. Reaches out, takes one more and looks at the pictures that are hanging on the wall behind Mrs. Anderson. They are family pictures. One shows Mrs. Anderson, her husband and their three daughters. A little further to the left is one, showing Mrs Anderson, her husband and their son, Alex. Mrs. Anderson places the picturefrom the magazine on the wall, beside a picture of Alex. She says:-”Look Tor, he has grown up, hasn’t he?”-”Mrs. Anderson, why have I never seen him before?”......
