    Amy Kathleen Ryan

Paperback (HMH Books for Young Readers, Jan. 19, 2010)
Nothing is beyond Kristi Carmichaelā€™s disdainā€”her hippie high school, her friend Jacob, her workaholic mom. Yet for all her attitude and her mind-reading abilities, Kristi has a vulnerable side. She can hear the thoughts of her fellow students, calling her fat and gross. Sheā€™s hot for Gusty Peterson, one of the most popular guys in school, but of course, sheā€™s sure he thinks she is disgusting. And sheā€™s still mad at her father, who walked out on them two years ago. Soon, a school project brings her together with Gusty, her father comes home and drops a bombshell, and a friend comes out of the closet, and suddenly she is left doubting that she can read people at all.Bitingly funny but ultimately poignant and positive, this YA novel is completely on the mark.

And sheā€™s still mad at her father, who walked out on her two years ago. Sian Turner

    eBook (, July 21, 2017)
Emma Logan was born different, but not in an obvious, physical way. You probably wouldnā€™t bother taking a second glance at her if you saw her walking down the street, especially when she tries so hard to appear utterly ordinary.Emma has a secret ability that she calls ā€˜vibesā€™, which means she can physically feel other peopleā€™s emotions. If someone around her is sad, her heart feels cold and heavy; if theyā€™re jealous, it feels like a worm wriggling around inside her skull. Her life is a bewildering Ģ¶ and sometimes overwhelming Ģ¶ mess of other peopleā€™s emotions.Unable to participate in ā€˜normalā€™ life, Emma struggles through childhood treated like a shadow by almost everyone except for her popular best friend, Letty. When Letty leaves for university, Emma elects to remain at home. Her frustrated dad talks her into applying for a voluntary job at a local primary school, where Emma is delighted to discover that her gift has some advantages after all. After moving on to her first paid job in a secondary school, Emma comes across Jenna, a student in trouble. But can Emma help Jenna without revealing her ā€˜giftā€™ and losing the anonymity sheā€™s tried so desperately to retain?Vibes is a coming of age novel with an interesting twist. Sian Turner is an excellent and imaginative writer, and her main protagonists are well drawn and believable, as is her dialogue. I am already looking forward to her next novel. (Sally Patricia Gardner, author of Lillianā€™s Story.)

Gusty Peterson, the hottest bimboy in school, is always thinking Iā€™m sick, as in totally gross to look at. Not that it matters, since I donā€™t have a crush on him or anything. And Mallory, my first real friend since forever, has disturbing romantic ideas about me and my ginormous gazungas. Ask me if Iā€™d rather not know these things. I have enough to worry about with my dad showing up after two years of saving Africa from typhoid, ready to resuscitate our relationship. Thereā€™s something heā€™s not telling me. I know it. And now Iā€™ve been assigned to work with Gusty in a hideous new project the faculty are torturing us with at school. Itā€™s so wonderful to explore yourself with someone whoā€™s always thinking youā€™re sick. Iā€™d probably be a lot better off if I werenā€™t psychic after all . . . ā€œIf you ever thought reading peopleā€™s minds would make it easier to understand them, Amy Kathleen Ryan is here to tell you that youā€™re dead wrong. It isn't easy being able to read minds -- guys' minds, especially. Gusty Peterson, the hottest bimboy in school, is always thinking I'm sick, as in totally gross to look at. Not that it matters, since I don't have a crush on him or anything. And Mallory, my first real friend since forever, has disturbing, romantic ideas about me bouncing in his brain. Even worse, scrawny Jacob has bizarre fantasies about decorating my ginormous gazungas with mascarpone cheese. Ask me if I'd rather not know these things. I have enough to worry about with my dad showing up after a two-year vacation from fatherhood, ready to rekindle our relationship before jetting off to save Africa from typhoid. There's something he's not telling me. I know it. Plus, I've been hiding a cat in my room for two years, which has been giving my mom horrible allergies. When she finds out, her severely clogged head will finally explode. And now I've been assigned to work with Gusty in a hideous new project the faculty are torturing us with at school. It's so wonderful to explore yourself with someone who's always thinking you're sick. I'd probably be a lot better off if I weren't psychic after all...
