A great story that was immensely popular and critically acclaimed when it was first published. In fact, as we find out from the dust jacket, McCloskey had wanted to illustrate this story every since he first read it as a young boy. His exuberant b&w drawings can be found throughout the book and make the story all that more enjoyable.

Trigger John's son, an orphan from Maine is on his way to Beechwood, Pennsylvania, with no intention of letting himself be adopted, sight unseen, by Mr. & Mrs. George Smith. He slips off the train and enters Beechwood, so to speak, by the backway; that is , he falls in with a gang of twelve-year-olds like himself, who think they are far tougher than they are.
