During the mid to late 1960’s the Civil Rights era was in full bloom.Martin Luther King preached a message of non-violence, one that others would ignore. In fact there were some who wanted to ‘Kill Whitey’.With Dr. King’s assassination in the spring of 1968, things would take an ominous turn.Black students, swept up in revenge rhetoric, would strike out using their fists on those at hand. In my case, it was at Menlo-Atherton High School, the premiere public secondary school on San Francisco’s mid-peninsula.Those not swept up in the violence treasured each other and excelled on and off the fields.Track would consume me, especially winning gold.With this backdrop things exploded in the fall of 1966.Although the ‘The Summer of Love’ followed a year later, few could guess what would follow.This is a story about love, romance, vibrant music, friendship and sports excellence.Back then they were the only things that mattered.However the politics of the day would drag many of us down.Some didn’t think we would make it; even now, there are those who are still affected.Reflection illuminates.That overriding thought takes precedence throughout this memoir.I hope you enjoy it.James C.
