Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, June 8, 2017)
The story opens with Tom complaining that life lacks adventure. It's been a while since they returned from Siberia, and a fresh Adrenaline fix is needed to take the edge off sitting around and reading books about faraway places. Tom wants to "go off in the jungle, fight wild beasts and escape from wild savages, all in the name of good fun." Tom's cravings are solved by the appearance of one Sam Preston, the owner of a large circus, who needs a new attraction for his side show. He has been informed of a place in the jungles of South America where a race of giants live. Sam's show "must have such a creature," and Tom is offered a princely sum to go procure one or two. Coincidently, the fellow previously sent on this quest by Preston has gone missing. Tom is tasked with either bringing him home or giving his remains a proper burial. To add insult to other natural hazards, a competitor in a rival circus, sics a generic bad-guy on Tom. He is to try and foil the plan and beat Our Hero to the prize. This guy is so bad, he is a wolf in priest's clothing. You can probably guess the outcome, but you'll have to read the story to be sure.

Tom Swift in Captivity is the thirteenth volume in Victor Appleton’s Tom Swift series – the thirteenth book in the line of over 100 adventure and science fiction novels dedicated to young readers. This book, as all the others in the series, features Tom Swift in the role of the protagonist. Tom, famous for his inventions and his successful scientific experiments, is approached by a circus owner and commissioned to find a missing person named Jake Poddington who had been pursuing a tribe of giants in South Africa and disappeared while following the tracks of the monsters. Tom Swifts owns several airships that he could use for finding the missing man, but the airship is not the only invention he can and will use during his journey. Tom Swift in Captivity, like all the other books in the series, goes to great length to describe scientific discoveries and technological innovations that are now part of our everyday life, but were considered magical and futuristic at the time the book was published. The plot is mainly driven by Tom Swift’s inventions, especially his inventions in the field of transportation – going into the wilderness to find Poddington would have been impossible, had it not been for Tom Swift’s airship and his extraordinary weapons. Technology is so much at the center of all Tom Swift novels that they are sometimes called invention fiction. There are more than 100 Tom Swift novels, organized in five series. The first novel came out in 1910, with the title character created by Edward Stratemeyer. Victor Appleton, the name specified as the name of the writer is actually a pseudonym used by a number of ghost writers between 1910 and 2007 when the last novel in the series was published. The Tom Swift series has inspired the greatest science fiction writers of our times, including Isaac Asimov, Steve Wozniak and numerous others.

4 Audio CD's - 4 Hours and 11 Minutes. Tom Swift in Captivity, or, A Daring Escape by Airship, is Volume 13 in the original Tom Swift novel series. Tom Swift is approached by Mr. Preston, the owner of a circus, and begins to tell the story of Jake Poddington, Mr. Preston’s most skilled hunter. As it turns out, Jake went missing just after sending word to Preston that Jake was on the trail of a tribe of giants, somewhere in South Africa. That was the last Preston has heard of Jake Poddington. Preston would like Tom to use one of his airships to search for Poddington, and if possible, bring back a giant for the circus. As a side note, some elements and characters included in the Tom Swift books portray some ethnic groups in a very dated manner that modern readers, and listeners, may find offensive. Our CDs are packaged in premium DVD cases with CD labeling printed right on the CD in full color. We do not use paper stick-on labels, these tend to peel off over time and can really jam up car CD players and computers. We chose to use DVD cases for our CD sets, as we have found they hold up better in shipping and in regular usage than the typical CD jewel case. Please note: All recordings we offer on CD are produced with recordings from Librivox, public domain works recorded by volunteers. We at St. Clare Audio would like to thank the volunteers for their gift of offering their work to the public domain. St. Clare Audio's niche is providing them in ready-to-purchase CD sets, for those who cannot download, or have not the desire or time to do so, as well as the benefit of a nice case and professionally produced CDs. Tom Swift in Captivity Audiobook is read by Tom Weiss.

"Oh, I thought this was going to be something exciting," replied Tom, motioning toward the book he had discarded. "But say! the make-believe adventures that fellow had, weren't anything compared to those we went through in the city of gold, or while rescuing the exiles of Siberia."
