  • The Twelfth of Never

    Brenda Ortega

    language (, Jan. 27, 2014)
Presley may be smart, but she buckles under pressure – or more specifically, she alphabetizes. In stressful moments her mind grabs words and compulsively sorts the letters, like a frightened guard dog chasing its tail. So it’s no surprise when signs from the universe constantly warn her: stay out of the spotlight. That’s hard to do when her Elvis-loving mom, the school secretary, plays embarrassing snippets of The King’s hits on the PA every day. It’s even harder when the school’s biggest goofball nominates Presley for president and her campaign speech turns disastrous. Her greatest refuge from the drama is her adorable nephew. But Luke’s mom – Presley’s teenage sister – has a secret that threatens to tear the boy from the family forever, unless Presley can stop it.Maybe the universe is out to get her. Or perhaps it’s whispering a new message: Stay cool. Step into the spotlight. Summon your inner Elvis.

    Jeanie Gunn

Paperback (Book Jungle, Jan. 28, 2008)
Jeannie Gunn was a 20th century Australian teacher and author. After college she and her sisters ran a school. The Little Black Princess: a True Tale of life in the Never-Never Land, published in 1905 chronicled the childhood of an Indigenous Australian named Bett Bett. Gunn's second book, We of the Never-Never (1909), was a recounting of her time in the Northern Territory with only the names of people changed to obscure their identities. Although Gunn never wrote another novel she did write stories about the characters in her first two novels. Gunn was voted the third most popular writer in Australia and was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her writing and advocacy work.

Excerpt from We of the Never-Never Knowing the Maluka by repute, however, every one was agreed that the Elsey had struck it lucky, until the telegraph wire, whispering the gossip Of Darwin to the Katherine, whispered that the new Boss for the Elsey had been and gone and married a missus just before leaving the South, and was bringing her along with him. Then the Sanguine Scot was filled with wrath, the Company with compassion, while the Dandy's consternation found relief in a dismayed Heavens above (the Dandy, by the way, was only a dandy in his love of sweet, clean clothes and orderly surroundings. The heart of the man had not a touch of dandyism in it.) The Head Stockman was absent in his camp. Had he been present, much might have been said on the advantages Of having a woman about the place. The Wag, however, retained his usual flow Of speech and spirits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
