  • The Three Giants

    Joseph Edward Andrews

This is a story told before it was written. It came out of a bedtime routine that began with reading our children a traditional story or fairy tale. One evening they asked for a new story, something just for them. Of course in the clear logic of children, if we could make up a story one night, we could do it every night. So from the age of three and a half until sometime in elementary school it became a daily challenge for either my wife or me to create a short tale to entertain them after reading time. TheThree Giants was one of those. Originally created and told over several nights to fulfill a daily obligation for which I will ever be grateful.

Paperback (David R. Godine, Publisher, May 31, 2018)
The tale of a lost race of giants and what happens when their existence, and their location, becomes known by the outside world. After finding a huge tooth on the docks, English explorer Archibald Leopold Ruthmore sets out to seek the race of giants to whom the tooth belongs and discovers nine giants, the survivors of a singularly gentle and kindly race. He lives among them for ten months, and on returning home he makes a mistake that he regrets forever―he writes a book revealing their existence and location. School Library Journal said, “Part fable, part fantasy, and part morality tale, this unusual French import takes the form of a 19th-century explorer’s journal, illustrated with intricate watercolors… The powerful and thought-provoking messages require reflection and may be used to spark lively discussions.”

  • The Twin Giants

    Dick King-Smith, Mini Grey

    Hardcover (Candlewick, June 10, 2008)
When twin giants set out in search of happiness, the result is a comedy of errors that is doubly clever and enormously funny."Isn’t he e-nor-mous!" says the giant father when his first twin son is born. "There’s a-lot-uv-’im!" notes the giant mother when the second twin boy arrives. And as Normus (a vegetarian) and Lottavim (a carnivore) grow and grow, the two are hugely happy — playing Roll the Boulder, singing badly, and doing everything together. But when the day comes for the hulking lads to seek the giantesses of their dreams, will going their separate ways only lead them into double trouble?
