  • The Story of Dancing Puppy

    J. R. Terrier

language (Terrier Texts / NTIS, Feb. 22, 2011)
“Dancing Puppy” is a heart-warming story for readers (and listeners) of all ages who like happy-ending animal stories.Mrs. Hound, Dancing Puppy’s mother - a stray who lived on the big city streets of Washington, DC - had a litter of six puppies - all very cute - except for Dancing Puppy. One day while she was out trying to find food for her pups, Mrs. Hound was hit by a speeding vehicle. The driver didn’t bother to stop to check on her – he left her and simply sped away. However, Mrs. Hound was able to drag herself out of the street and managed to get back to her pups. She fought to stay alive until she found homes for each of her puppies. After she had put up a make-shift sign that read “Free Puppies to a Good Home”, four of her pups were almost immediately adopted. She told the remaining two to go to the nearby church and wait at the door because the doors would soon open to let the choir members in for their nightly song practice. That night, a choir member decided she would take the cute little girl puppy - Mrs. Hound’s fifth puppy - home for her kids to play with. But no one seemed to want to take the last pup (the not-so-cute one) home. So the choir director took the last of Mrs. Hound’s pups to the neighboring animal shelter. The not-so-cute puppy lived at the animal shelter for months and as he grew, his already scrappy-looking fur seemed to get more awful looking with each passing day. This puppy wanted desperately for someone to adopt him and to take him to a nice warm home like he imagined his puppy brothers and sisters had. Finally – one day a little girl and her mother came to the shelter and saw him. Beth, the little girl, thought he was cute - especially when he stood on his hind legs and tried to dance. Beth and her mother Peggy adopted him, named him Dancing Puppy, and took him home with them where he lived happily for several months. When his new “family” – the Holland’s - had to return to their home in Oregon, Dancing Puppy did not understand that the big dog crate in the back of the SUV was for him to ride in all the way back to Oregon. Instead, Dancing Puppy thought he was being abandoned again and that the Holland’s were going to drop him off at the animal shelter. He definitely didn’t want to go back to the shelter so he bolted out of the house – his wonderful, warm home for the last several months - and he ran away and hid and watched as the Holland’s, after having searched for him for several hours, finally drove away leaving him on his own - and all alone. Dancing Puppy was very sad but he was determined he would do all he could to “find” his family again. This story takes the reader through the exploits of Dancing Puppy over many miles and several states as he tries to find his family again.A story with a happy ending that should delight animal lovers of all ages!
