Edward Stratemeyer (1862-1930) was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He was an American publisher and writer of books for children. He wrote 150 books himself, and created the most famous of the series books for juveniles, including the Rover Boys (1899 and after), Bobbsey Twins (1904), Tom Swift (1910), Hardy Boys (1927), and Nancy Drew (1930) series, among others. Stratemeyer pioneered the technique of producing long-running, consistent series of books using a team of freelance authors to write standardised novels, which were published under a pen name owned by his company. Through his Stratemeyer Syndicate, founded in 1906, Stratemeyer produced short plot summaries for the novels in each series, which he sent to other writers who completed the story. Stratemeyer's series were also innovative in that they were intended purely as entertainment, with little of the moral lessons or educational intent found in most other popular fiction of the early twentieth century. Stratemeyer's series included, besides the famous ones, many that are now forgotten except by collectors: The Motor Boys (1906), Honey Bunch (1923), The Blythe Girls (1925) and Bomba the Jungle Boy (1926).

This series of books for wide-awake American lads was begun several years ago with the publication of "The Rover Boys at School." At that time the author had in mind to write not more than three volumes, relating the adventures of Dick, Tom, and Sam Rover at Putnam Hall, "On the Ocean," and "In the Jungle," but the publication of these books imme-diately called for a fourth, "The Rover Boys Out West," and then a fifth, "The Rover Boys on the Great Lakes." Still my young friends did not appear to be satisfied, and so I now present to them this sixth volume, which relates the stirring adventures of the three Rover boys in the Adirondacks, whither they had gone to solve the mystery of a certain brass-lined money casket found by them on an island in Lake Huron. In writing this volume I have had a double purpose in view; not only to pen a tale which might prove pleasing to all boys, but one which might likewise give them a fair idea of the wonderful resources and natural beauty of this section of the United States. Ours is a wonderful country, and none of us can learn too much concerning it.

There are nine individual books in The Adventures of Archibald & Jockabeb series. The books should be read in order. The second book in the series is In the Mountains. Worse yet, they soon hear stories from Ben about the strange and suspicious circumstances under which Gran’s husband, Walt, died a terrible death, together with how a deadly creature might well be roaming in the mountains nearby.When the boys leave camp early one morning with Ben and Gran’s old dog, Champ, to hike high in the mountains to find Tommy Two Feathers, an old Indian who may shed some light on whether the rumors are fact or fiction, they have no idea that what they ultimately learn will connect back to Haktu and his tribe. After being joined by a white wolf named Ghost Rider, the boys, Ben, Champ, and Tommy Two Feathers set out solve a mystery that has gone on for over a century. As danger looms at almost every turn, Archibald and Jockabeb hope that the magic blue feather they received from Haktu really does have the power to protect them.The reader once again has the opportunity to watch the two brothers’ personalities evolve, especially Jockabeb. And, as in the first book, the classic battle between the forces of good and evil play out—only this time in rarified mountain air.
