Excerpt from The Queen's Necklace, Vol. 1 of 2His connection with the affair of the necklace is rather problematical, except in so far as he was the confidant and mystical adviser of the Cardinal, whose hopes, founded upon his supposed correspondence with the queen, he undoubtedly nursed with his predictions of great power and influence to come by means of it.The early history of Jeanne de saint-remy, by courtesy Countess, styled also of Valois, is told by Dumas with substantial accuracy, and need not be repeated here. She married Monsieur de La Motte, a private in the Gendarmes, at bar-sur-aube, and dubbed him Count, by virtue of her own Countess-ship.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is loosely based on the Affair of the Diamond Necklace, an episode involving fraud and royal scandal that made headlines at the court of Louis XVI in the 1780s.Balsamo is back and, after a hiatus of 10 years and the adoption of a new identity (Count Cagliostro), he is ready to begin anew his efforts at bringing down the throne of France. The action centers around Marie Antoinette, portrayed quite positively by Dumas, and the infamous affair of the diamond necklace. A tangled intrigue revolves around the fabulous necklace, worth 1.5 million francs according to Dumas. The court, apparently already suffering under the dual weight of an embarrassing lack of funds and rumors of the queen's infidelity spread by her many enemies, can hardly withstand a blow in both quarters. From here Dumas weaves various threads and intrigues with his usual aplomb as his varied cast of characters are drawn inexorably towards their ultimate ends.

This antiquarian book contains Alexandre Dumas's 1849 novel, "The Queen's Necklace". It is based on a famous case of fraud and royal scandal concerning Marie Antoinette's complicity in a plot to deceive the crown jewellers as to the cost of a diamond necklace, which further spoiled the already-tarnished reputation of the queen. Although seeming to present an idealised picture of Marie Antoinette, it also illustrates the decay and impending decline of the contemporary nobility. A thrilling tale by a master story-teller, "The Queen's Necklace" is highly recommended for fans of historical fiction, and would make for a worthy addition to any bookshelf. Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was a famous French writer. He is best remembered for his exciting romantic sagas, including "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". Despite making a great deal of money from his writing, Dumas was almost perpetually penniless thanks to his extravagant lifestyle. His novels have been translated into nearly a hundred different languages, and have inspired over 200 motion pictures. We are republishing this antiquarian book in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
