Audrey Couloumbis, Lee Adams, Listening Library

Audiobook (Listening Library, Aug. 23, 2006)
Eleven-year-old Sallie March is a whip-smart tomboy and voracious reader of Western adventure novels. When she and her sister, Maude, are orphaned for the second time, they decide to escape their new self-serving guardians for the wilds of the frontier and an adventure the likes of which Sallie has only read about. This time, however, the wanted woman isn't a villain out of a dime novel: it's Sallie's very own sister! Narrated by the irrepressible Sallie, what follows is the rollicking story of what really happened out there on the range. Not the lies the papers printed, but the honest-to-goodness truth of how things went from bad to worse and how two very different sisters went from being orphans to being outlaws and lived to tell the tale! Bursting with memorable characters, fast-paced action, and laugh-out-loud moments, The Misadventures of Maude March is Newbery Honor winner Audrey Couloumbis' most unforgettable work yet.

Audible Audiobook (The Publishing Mills, Dec. 29, 1999)
What Armistead Maupin did for San Francisco, Detour columnist Dennis Hensley does double for Los Angeles in a tale of a struggling screenwriter, his circle of urbane celebrity-seeking friends, and their madcap attempts to make it in the biz."(213)?" you may ask. Well, the area code, of course."Misadventures?"Just the usual crazy high jinks underemployed Tinseltown wannabes usually get up to. Like making off with fish from Tina Louise's koi pond. Or calling Leeza Gibbons via Airfone to ask who does her headshots. Or harassing Alicia Silverstone with tales of watermelon-loving porn stars. Or auctioning off Andrew Shue's chicken wing and Heather Locklear's lip print for charity. You know. And the wannabes themselves? Well, there's Craig, the aforementioned struggling screenwriter. And Dandy Rio, his best friend and star of her own hit sitcom, That's Just Dandy. Miles, their superpublicist friend, and Ulysses, a noble but unsuccessful musician from Craig and Dandy's college days. Oh, and a whole slew of love slaves.Packed with Hollywood life lessons and more B-level celebs than you can shake a casting sheet at, Misadventures in the (213) is a brilliantly witty romp through the L.A. entertainment machine. And just wait till you come out the other end.Because, of course, money, fame, and glamour aren't everything.
  • The Misadventures of Batty the Cat

    Kym Kostos, Vincent Stead

Audible Audiobook (Vincent Stead, Aug. 6, 2014)
When Batty the cat was born, he was the smallest out of his six brothers and sisters. Batty was born on a farm in a barn near the hay stack in the corner. Farmer Joe had put a blanket out for Batty's mom, Pickles. Pickles was named Pickles because she was born near a pickle barrel one summer evening. Much like Batty's mother Pickles, Batty was born on a warm summer night. Farmer Steve had heard Pickles howling really loud as she delivered her litter of kittens. Batty was the last to be born. Batty was a black cat with a little patch of white under his tummy. Even though Batty was the smallest, he still wanted to drink as much milk as he could from his mommy. When Batty and his litter were old enough, Farmer Ted took the box of kittens to the park and put up a sign that read "FREE KITTENS TO A GOOD HOME". The litter of kittens went really quick. Except for Batty. Batty was the last one left. "Well, why won't anyone take me home with them?" Batty thought to himself. "I'm just as good as any other cat." Batty was sad because he thought no one wanted him. But, then, he looked up from the box and he saw someone looking down at him smiling. It was a man. "Well, hello there little guy," the smiling man said. "You look like you need someone to love you." He then picked up Batty and held him and rubbed his cheek against Batty's face. Batty was excited. Someone had finally wanted to take him home! "You are perfect," the man said as he walked back to his car. His new owner took him to his car and placed Batty on the car seat next to him. Batty liked feeling close to his new owner. So, he climbed up the side of the car seat and curled up around his new owner's shoulders, where that would become his favorite place to lie when he was tired. Batty was able to look out the window and see the big world around him as he was driven to his new home.

    Chris Van Allsburg

Hardcover (HMH Books for Young Readers, Nov. 4, 2014)
From two-time Caldecott winner Chris Van Allsburg, creator of Jumanji and The Polar Express, comes a poignant story of one hamster’s struggle with destiny. Being a pet store hamster isn’t much fun for Sweetie Pie, but life in human homes proves downright perilous. As Sweetie Pie longingly gazes out of his cage at the squirrels frolicking in the trees, he wonders if he’ll ever have the chance to feel the wind in his fur. Allsburg’s expressive, soft-hued illustrations artfully capture a hamster’s-eye view of the wide and wonderful world where maybe, just maybe, Sweetie Pie could someday run free.
