  • The Life of St. Francis of Assisi

Bonaventure St. Bonaventure, Henry Edward Manning

Paperback (TAN Books, April 1, 2010)
"Francis, go and build up My house, which thou seest, is falling into ruin." To fulfill this command of Our Lord, St Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) began by restoring physical churches and continued by building up the spiritual Church in souls. Francis' humility, purity, and true joy inspired many to conversion and a deeper faith. Never ordained a priest, St. Francis nonetheless was a preacher and a miracle-worker of the first order - curing, prophesying, casting out devils, turning water into wine, and raising people frmo the dead. The Life of St Francis of Assisi by St Bonaventure conveys a picture of the Saint that renders an indelible impression of a man totally transformed by God. This is the original TAN edition now with updated typesetting, fresh new cover, new size and quality binding, and the same trusted content.

  • The Little Flowers of St Francis of Assisi

    Francis of Assisi

Hardcover (BOOK of the Month Club, March 15, 1976)
The Little Flowers of St. Francis of Assisi illustrates in purest form St Francis' love of humanity and of nature, a love so great that he preached to the sparrows as well as to the people around him. The fioretti, or little flowers, are fables, legends, and folk tales that grew up around the saint and his companions, celebrating their kinship with nature - they addressed all God's creatures as sister and brother - and the denial of vanity and things of the flesh that have made Francis at once perhaps the holiest and yet the most approachable of the great saints of legend.

    eBook (@AnnieRoseBooks, Jan. 27, 2016)
These stories of St. Francis and his first followers have inspired millions of people over the centuries. Since they were first committed to paper, they have motivated people to become better followers of Jesus (not St. Francis). For that reason, they have endured unlike any other early Franciscan literature. Many of the stories are known to us from other biographical sources, but in some cases, here they are expanded or made more florid. This edition of The Little Flowers is unique in its physical beauty as well as its editorial arrangement. For the first time, the stories have been arranged in the most likely chronological ordering of when they happened - rather than following the traditional ordering of them handed down for centuries. As a result, today's reader is now able to read The Little Flowers as a biograpical narrative of the life of St. Francis and the world-transforming movement that he founded.

  • The Little Flowers Of St. Francis

St. Francis of Assisi, Arthur Livingston

Paperback (Jazzybee Verlag, Jan. 14, 2017)
The Little Flowers of St. Francis (Italian Fioretti di San Francesco) is a florilegium (excerpts of his body of work) on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi which was composed at the end of the 14th century. The anonymous Italian text, almost certainly by a Tuscan author, is a version of the Latin Actus beati Francisci et sociorum eius, of which the earliest extant manuscript is one of 1390 AD. Luke Wadding ascribes the text to Fra. Ugolino da Santa Maria, whose name occurs three times in the Actus.
  • THE LITTLE FLOWERS OF ST. FRANCIS

Fra Ugolino Brunforte, William Heywood, A. G. Ferrers Howell

Paperback (Azafran Books, Dec. 6, 2019)
Little Flowers of Francis of Assisi is the name given to the classic collection of popular legends about the life of St. Francis of Assisi and his early companions (such as Brother Juniper). These poetic stories shed much light upon the genesis and development of the following of Saint Francis. The collection, one of the most delightful literary works of the Middle Ages, was translated into Italian by an unknown fourteenth-century friar from a larger Latin work, the ‘Actus B. Francisci et Sociorum Ejus’, attributed to Ugolino Brunforte. Or rather the fifty-three chapters which form the true text of the Fioretti were, for the four appendixes, on the Stigmata of St. Francis, the life of Fra Ginepro, and the life and the sayings of the Fra Egidio, are additions of later compilers. The first half of the collection reflects traditions that go back to the early days of the order; the other is believed to be substantially the work of Fra Ugolino da Monte Giorgio of the noble family of Brunforte. Saint Francis of Assisi abandoned a life of luxury for a life devoted to Christianity after reportedly hearing the voice of God, who commanded him to rebuild the Christian church and live in poverty. He was the founder of the Franciscan orders of the Friars Minor (Ordo Fratrum Minorum), the women’s Order of St. Clare (the Poor Clares), and the lay Third Order. He was also a leader of the movement of evangelical poverty in the early 13th century. Francis’s devotion to the human Jesus and his desire to follow Jesus’ example reflected and reinforced important developments in medieval spirituality. He was canonized as a saint just two years after his death, on July 16, 1228, by his former protector, Pope Gregory IX. In 1979 Pope John Paul II recognized him as the patron saint of ecology, honouring his boundless love for animals and nature.NOTE: This edition by Azafran Books was published in December 2019 and has been edited and formatted by a team of dedicated real people – not an algorithm!
