  • The Legend of the Secret Flowers

    Brandi Chambless

eBook (Christian Faith Publishing, Inc., Feb. 7, 2018)
The Legend of the Secret Flowers is a true story that took place in Memphis, Tennessee, once upon a time.It was just an ordinary day when Mama decided that the time was right to plant her bulbs in the garden. As with every other day, Mama enlisted the help of her four-year-old son to become her “special helper,” as she called him. This was no average assignment, but it was one that was to be esteemed and, of course, always followed by the reward of a delicious snack coupled with quality time.By virtue of the hidden nature of freshly planted bulbs, Mama’s special helper could not grasp why he could not see the flowers after all of his striving to bury the bulbs. It was then that Mama created the mystique of the secret flowers and told the boy how they were becoming something new in God’s rich soil. The Legend of the Secret Flowers became a teaching tool that reinforced several simple scriptural precepts, specifically the notion that God is always working on us, even when we cannot see the outcome. The boy grew taller but departed neither from the legend nor the lessons of the secret flowers that his mama told to him that one ordinary day. And Mama hid deep in her heart all the words God gave her as well. She remembered those secret flowers and the day with the four-year-old boy for many years to come but most especially in springtime when the flowers were in bloom.

  • The Legend of the Flower-Man

    Janina Flueras

language (Ludic Publishing, Aug. 28, 2018)
The Legend of the Flower Man is, first and foremost, a journey of initiation. The absence of suspense and the simple, but profound narrative aims at something more: to teach the little reader that events are not only made up of surfaces, but they also have a depth, which can be understood only though reflective thinking. Two of the main ideas in the text are: there are other truths than those which can be understood through the mind and, one cannot be truly happy in the absence of an authentic value system in which one can anchor one’s being. This is an educational book, in character and also in structure. Each fragment of the story is accompanied by a complementary exercise page, which targets several aspects of personal development. Some exercises and games are aimed at the development of the rational mind, others at the emotional development of the child, others aim at the formation and appreciation of values and, yet, others – drops of silence – combine physical movement with relaxation techniques. This rather unusual mix, at first sight, is far from being accidental. The goal of this combination of exercises is, as specified in the afterword, to promote a cross-curricular approach to education. As de Saint-Exupéry’s Little Prince taught his reader that one cannot see clearly except with one’s heart, this work reminds us of the transformational power of love, the only force capable of placing humans back on the vertical axis of the values that forge their being:“Whether we are aware or not, we act in accordance to the values in which we believe. And there are values by which mankind had always measured its happiness. Balance, peace, love, forgiveness, generosity seem to be our second genetic code, an inbuilt program which whatever we are deeply depends on. Whatever we are and whatever we have do not shut out each other. But, by all means, there is a certain weave of what we are on which the beauty of our life and a feeling of complete fulfilment depend.”

  • The Secret Legend of BirdBear

    Sophia Goss

    language (, March 10, 2015)
The Secret Legend of BirdBear by Sophia Elaine Goss is about family and some of the infinite forms families may take. Designed to be read as a family or to read alone the story inspires conversation, reflection and action in the ongoing adventure of building family that we all experience to different levels. Everyone on the planet, now or ever, is on a unique, hold-on ride of family dynamics and the prize is finding self. The writing of this first book of The Mer Tree series has been a thirty year journey for the author, who defined herself with the fictional families in the story. The idea for The Secret Legend of BirdBear began as a bedtime story for her preschool age son who chose the character BirdBear. Sophia's love of anthropology gave direction for the development of the historical fiction and the fantasy in the story is tinted in science, not magic.Throughout the years of the author's life other children, and the chances and changes in family life have inspired her to keep writing for the love and hope of better, future generations. Now a grandmother, as well as a great aunt, Sophia isn't done. Whether reaching back into the past or to the far reaches of the future the mystery of time and how it plays us is an endless theme of individuals, families, societies, worlds and universes. Enjoy the exploration with Pete, Yellow Leaf, Mighty Stream, and of course Mer as they all come to know and love BirdBear; a mutation and orphan that not only finds family, but saves them from the fate she is born under. There is plenty of growing up to do for all the characters as new situations arise in both the current day and thousands of years ago in the past. Dealing with the changes that just living brings is often harder on the adults while the younger characters thrive with new adventures. Mer and Pete visit the places and times of one another, sharing ideas and information that leave them both changed forever, and for the better.Tolerance and acceptance of the many differences among all living creatures is a continuing theme in The Secret Legend of BirdBear. The small creature, Mer crushes fear and hate with courage, love and faith in a Protector of all Creation. BirdBear is always forgiving and wins all hearts with her giant capacity for love. The main adult characters in the story aren't perfect parents, but they offer a gleaning of what adults are all about. Most importantly, they never give up when their children make life so very difficult.
